REPORTS OF ELECTION MEETINGS
TO THE ESITOB OF THE FHESB, Sir,—l was very pleased to see your reply in the leading article of. March 7. We have had statements made by •the Citizens’ Association members that they do not stand for party, hut , these for the benefit of all classes? Now, I must, on your own statements, thank you for admitting that “The Press” stands for party, and, of course, the public look to “The Press” as the
mouthpiece of the Citizens’ Association.'-' •it a strange thing that the Labour party started its campaign 12 days before’the Citizens’; and yet, at one meeting alone, the Citizens’ got as many inches in'“ The Press.” They were not long in catching up. Now, if you will turn to “The Press” report on the final speeches about the feneral election (November 26, 1935), y the rule Mr Forbes received 18 inches and Mr Coates 18 inches, total for party, 36 inches. For Labour, Mr Nash received 12 Inches, > which was the total for. the Labour party. I think this , ought to be answer enough.— Yours, etc.,., . C. E. HAWKER. March 7, 1936, [Our correspondent obviously believes only what he wants to believe and remembers only what he wants to remember. We have urged the Citizens’ Association to come out as a party, not because we believe that parties are desirable in municipal politics but because party conditions have already been made by the Labour- party and are inescapable. If our correspondent thinks the Labour party should have more space simply because it started its campaign earlier, he follows a line of reasoning that we cannot follow with him.—Ed., The press.”!
