SINGING OF THRUSHES

TO THE EDITOR' OF THE PRESS. Sir,—l am a great lover of birds, and for a number of years I have taken notes of when the first thrushes start to sing and when they stop singing. I have noticed that they almost always start to sing in May (an odd one may sing in April, but not often). They then sing on until about the beginning of January, and perhaps for a week or two of that month should it be very wet. They seem to love the rain and sing their best in wet, cold weather. On February 23 of this year they started to sing, and have sung each day since. I am wondering if this is as unusual as it seems to me to be, and whether any other of your readers have noticed it. I do not remember hearing them sing in February or March before, and I would like to know whether it was just the wet, wintry weather we had at that time that caused them to sing.—Yours, etc., FRANCES E. CAREW. Rangiora, March 7, 1936.
