ASHBURTON NO. 5 SCHEME DISCONTINUED ~ After being in existence for five years the No. 5 scheme, by which all able-bodied unemployed men were given work under the control of public bodies, was discontinued from Saturday. For the last few weeks, only about six men have been on the No. 5 scheme, employed by the Ashburton Borough Council. Some weeks ago the Ashburton County Council discontinued the utilisation of unemployed labour. In future all men registered as- unemployed at Ashburton will be given sustenance. There are 150 eligible for the sustenance payment this week, Cut With An Axe While taking part In a wood-chop-ping contest at the Mount Somers gymkhana on Saturday, John Albert Bates, aged 24, of Mayfield, received an extensive wound on his right ankle when his axe slipped and struck his leg. He was admitted to the Ashburton Public Hospital. Yesterday his condition was reported to be satisfactory. Harvest Thanksgiving Services Harvest thanksgiving services were held at several Ashburton churches ye The d ßev. E. N. Goring,’ of Spreydon (secretary of the Canterbury Baptist Auxiliary), was the preacher at, the Ashburton Baptist Church, which was suitably decorated with greenery. There was a large offering of produce, which will be auctioned this evening and the proceeds devoted to the church repair fund. Special harvest hymns were sung by the choir, under the conductorship of Mr E. J. Tucker. Appropriate addresses were given by the Rev, R. S. Watson at St, Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. The church was decorated by the choir-for the festival.- The harvest gifts will be sent to the Presbyterian Orphanage at Christchurch. Special harvest hymns were sung by the adult and junior choirs at the Baring Square Methodist Church. The Rev H. S. Kings, of Christchurch, conducted the services. The proceeds from the sale of the produce will be devoted to the church trust fund. Brigadier T. Buttunore and Mrs Buttimore, and Adjutant G. H. Pratt, of Christchurch, conducted the services at the Salvation Army Citadel, which was decorated with greenery and harvest gifts. Special hymns were sung at all services. Wakanul Rates Outstanding rates amounting to about £l5O will incur the penalty of 10 per cent, imposed by the Wakanui Road Board on all rates remaining unpaid by Friday. Of the total rate of £B5l 17s 2d struck for the current year about £7OO was collected. Dorothy Edmonds (2sec) 2. Picnics The annual picnic of the Baring Square Methodist Church choir was. Hdd at Lagmhor on Saturday, when about 40 members and friends attended. The weather was excellent, and an enjoyable day was- spent with games and competitions. Little White Ribboners, the cradle roll branch of the Ashburton Women’s Christian Temperance Union held their annual picnic on Saturday at the residence of, Mr G. W. Andrews, Chalmers avenue. An address was’ given by Mrs L. P. Bryan, and the afternoon was spent in games and treasure hunts.
