* KAIKOUKA * The monthly general meeting of the . Kaikoura County Council was held-when-there were present Messrs r. «• SS. (chairman). P. S. Humm. AlanHoward, T. R. Alexander, H. E- Ecples, ■js. MACKENZIE The monthly meeting of the Mackenzie County Council was held at Yairlie on Thursday, Mr C. J. Talbot presiding. In his statement, the chairman referred to the recent floods, and said the county was fortunate in that it had not suffered to the same extent as other districts. The weather had affected farmers’ returns by hindering the fattening of lambs and damaging crops. , . _ In his report, the engineer (Mr D. Jeune) stated that heavy rains had caused general scouring on roads and fords were washed out. One or two bridges had been slightly damaged, and the bridge at Albury had been washed out. The county generally, however, had not suffered to the same extent as other places, and damage would be covered by ordinary maintenance expenditure Grants were made to the Fairlie branch of the Plunket Society (£l2), the Albury branch (£8), the Mackenzie Highland Pipe Band (£6 6s), and Sir Arthur Dobson memorial fund (£2 2s) A letter from Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P., stated: “I desire to draw your attention to two deathtraps for motorists on the Br'aemar road, midway between the Maryburn gate and Guide Hill gate,” The letter described how at one point a serious accident had been narrowly averted. Another letter from Mr Burnett made suggestions for grading the road. It was decided that the matters should receive attention when P °A letter was received from the Main Highway's Board asking for support for a recommendation that an act should be passed giving county councils power to prohibit stock travelling on certain highways. It was, decided to support the recommendation. The resignation of the council’s foreman (Mr G. Berry) was accepted, and on the motion of the chairman the appointment of a successor was left in the hands of the engineer. . A statement presented by the engm-eer-clerk (Mr D. The financial statement for the month showed that the dav’s paysheet amounted to £4501 12s lOd, and that the debit balance at the bank was £l7Bl 12s 4d. Receipts for the month totalled £7209 7s sd, and included general rates £2218 8s 9d, hospital rates £IOOO 14s lOd, rate subsidy £IOSB 15s 3d, Main Highways subsidy £1382 17s Bd, and Glen Lyon road wages £Bl7 19s Id.
