TIMARU HARBOUR RACE G. GRIFFITHS WINS SPEECHLY MILE (SPECIAL TO THE PSBBS.) TIMARU, March 8. First place and fastest time in the • Speechly mile race in the harbour on Saturday was secured by G. Griffiths, who beat his brother, C. Griffiths, by 25 yards. Neither brother had previously competed in a mile race. Conditions could not have been better, the day being bright 1 and sunny and the water smooth.' Alarge crowd saw the race from the’ Marine parade and No. 2 wharf. Of the 12 who had entered, all attended but M Shanahan. Donnlthorne, the youngest competitor in the event, was the first to b f , s ® n s away > a mlnute and a half ahead of W. Lawson. Then followed J. Clemens. C. Griffiths. G Griffiths. T. Lane? S A. Keen, R. King, L. Hunt, F. Lobb, and p. Parsons. When half the distance had been covered, G. Griffiths was ahead cl Lawson, who was close to him, C. Grllfltns. Lane, Miss Keen, and R. King beIng neirt in the order. G. Griffiths continued to > hold the lead and crossed the line about 25 yards ahead of his brother. Lane being a similar distance In” the rear. foHowed by Lawson, King, Lobb. and Miss Keen.
