■. Mr and Mrs A. A. Stichbury (Wellington), who are the guests of Mr and Mrs Vesey Robinson, Kaitupa will leave on Thursday for a short visit to Ashburton before returning north. . Mrs R. Young (Naseby) is visiting her mother, Mrs W. Robinson. Deans avenue. Mrs Jack Matson and her two children (Sumner) will leave on April 16 for a few months’ visit to Sydney. Mrs Fred Armstrong and Miss Betty Armstrong (Papanm road) will leave on Wednesday for a trip to England. Miss Alison Addison (Wellington) is the guest of Mrs J. H. Hall, Papanui road. Mr and Mrs C. Hogarth (Dunedin) are visiting Chrtstchurch and have taken a flat at Roseneatn, Papanui road. Pavmaster - Lieutenant - Commander W. G. Hewson, R.N., and Mrs Hewson (Karori, Wellington), have left for Nelson, from where they will motor to Christchurch. Mrs Hewson, who was formerly Miss Kathleen Bristed, has many friends in Christchurch. Miss Gladys Watkins, the Wellington carillonist, who has been on holiday in the South Island, has returned to Wellington. Mrs S. Chapman (Clyde, Otago Central) and Miss Mabel Chapman (Invercargill) are spending a short, holiday in Christchurch. Miss Rene Hayward, who has been staying with. Mrs J. J,_ McGrath (“Glenloch,” Little River) has returned to her home in Chester street. Miss M. Blackett, chief librarian at Wanganui Public Library, will leave by the Rangitiki for a visit to England. She intends returning to New Zealand in June. Miss Blackett was formerly a staff member of the Christchurch Public Library. Miss Margaret Ashby (Tomes road, Papanui) is at present the guest of Mrs R. J. Jack, Springbank, North Canterbury. At a meeting of the executive of the North Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes held recently Mrs Couch was reappointed voluntary organiser for her district. • Mrs A. K. Warren (St. Mary’s Vicarage) a)nd Miss Joan Maling (Durham street north) will leave tomorrow night for Wellington, where they will join the Rangitiki for a trip to Britain. Mrs R. J. Gilmour (Invercargill), who has been visiting RuSsell, is spending a few days in Auckland before returning south. Mr and Mrs Cecil McDonald and children (Brisbane), who have been spending three months in Christchurch and Geraldine, will leave to-morrow night for Wellington to join the Wang'anella on Thursday for Sydney. The engagement. is announced of Gwerieth Eleanor, daughter of the late Mrs Jordan and of Mr A. R. Jordan (Merivale), to Sydney David, elder son of Mr and Mrs R. A. Handisides, St. Albans. Mrs Richard David will leave to-night for Wellington, where she will spend a few days before leaving on Thursday morning by the Rangitiki for England. Her mother, Mrs Charles Cooper, will accompany her to Wellington and will spend about 10 days with her sister, Mrs Shand. Miss Lulu Henderson (Invercargill) is spending a holiday at Hanmer Springs. Miss Noreen Russell (Heaton street) will leave to-morrow for the North Island, where she will visit MorrinsviJle, Auckland, and the Great Barrier Island. Mrs W. C, Sproule and Miss Poppy Sproule (Napier) have left for Sydney, where they will join the Orion for a trip to Britain. Mr and Mrs D. T. Larnach, Queen street, Waimate, announce the engagement of their second daughter, Lilah Isabel, to Clifford Dennison, younger son of Mr and Mrs S. Medlicott (Hook). Mr C. D. Medlicott lives in Waverley, Taranaki. “Christchurch may well be proud of its mayoresses, and with the name of the mayoresses may be added the name of the late Mrs J. S. Neville, who, had been a help and inspiration to all the mayoresses with whom she had worked,” said Miss M. G. Havelaar, when speaking of the assistance that Mrs Neville had given to Mrs D. G. Sullivan in her work for poor and distressed families. The tribute was paid on Saturday afternoon at the meeting held in the Choral Hall to make a presentation to Mrs Sullivan in recognition of her services to the community. Members of the choir of St. David’s Church, Cust, entertained Mr and Mrs S. Smith (Bankhead) at supper after choir practice, and presented them with a bronze ornament on a rosewood stand. Mr Smith has been a member of the choir for several years.
