OPAWA FOOTBALL CLUB ANNUAL MEETING HELD (BPKCUL TO THE PHEBS.) BLENHEIM, March 1. There was a large attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Opawa Football Club, held last evening. The chairman referred to the death of Mr I. Patchett, a foundation member of the club, those present standing in silence for a few moments as a mark of respect. The committee’s annual report disclosed that the -last season had been quite a successful one. The junior B team had won the junior championship, junior seven-a-side cup, and junior charity cup. The fourth grade team won their grade championship cup and also the seven-a-side cup. In the championship they had a won-, derful record, playing 12 games, winning 12, and scoring 282 points, with only six points recorded against them. The seniors had acquitted themselves well. The following are to be congratulated on gaining representative honours: —Senior: D. Lane, L. McMahon, C. O’Sullivan, and J. Best. These four also played in the All Black trials at Nelson. J. Best attained the goal of all players and represented New Zealand in the 1935-36 All Black tour of Great Britain. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr H. V. Lark; vice-presidents, Messrs W. W. Tylor, J. Dixon, R. Patchett, L. Green, T, Horton. H. E. Fuller, C. St. C. Cecil, K. Patchett, R. V. Bythell, and D. Croquet Championships A team of ladies from the Blenheim Croquet Club went to Picton yesterday to compete in the final round of the annual contest for the croquet cup against a team of the Picton Club. In the first round of the contest Blenheim beat Picton on the Picton green, the second round, played on the Blenheim green, resulting in a tie. Blenheim, by winning the concluding round, become the holders of the cup for the year. The green was in splendid order and most of the matches were very evenly contested. River Terrace Widened A great improvement has been made to Russell terrace, fronting St. Andrew’s Church, by the cutting back of the bank on the river side to the extent of eight feet so as to give more space. The riverbank side is used for car parking, and the authorities of the church had drawn the Borough Council’s attention to the fact that when cars are parked there very limited room was left as access to the church; they therefore considered* that the area was not a desirable _ place _ as a parking area. This locality being a particularly handy place as a car park, the council decided to enlist the cooperation of the river hoard in cutting back the river bank so as to widen the lerrace. This work has now been done, which has made a most decided improvement. A nine-inch wall is to be built so as not to weaken the bank. At last night’s meeting of the Borough Council the warm appreciation of the river -board’s co-operation was. expressed. ... As March 20 will be the eve of the St. Patrick’s Sports Association s golden jubilee sports meeting, it has been decided to accord the visiting athletes a civic welcome that evening. The Mayor will welcome the visitors at the Market Place Rotunda. Bowls A most successful electric light tournament was held by the Marlborough Bowling Club on their green in which 16 rinks competed, representing the Marlborough, Blenheim and Awatere Clubs. Jubilee Swimming Carnival The Blenheim' Amateur Swimming Club, which was founded 25 years ago, held a special jubilee swimming carnival at the Municipal Baths, and a large attendance of the public was entertained to a most interesting pro-, gramme of events. Particularly good entries were received from members of the Blenheim Club, also from Nelson, Picton and the newly-formed Havelock Club. The swimming was of a very good standard. The most spectacular race of the evening was the 220 yards men’s handicap, which was won by J. Pranks (Nelson), off’the eight second mark. R. Houlston, from scratch, swam a splendid race to gain second place, being only a foot behind the winner, J. Cdrskie came in a «iuse third, by the small margin of two feet.
