BRIDGE PARTY

A GREAT SUCCESS FOR NURSE MAUDE ASSOCIATION No name is more revered in Christchurch and none remembered with greater gratitude than that of Nurse Maude, who died last year after having devoted her' life to the poor and sick and suffering of the city, and it is pleasing to find that public gratitude to her is a very real thing in the community and that hundreds of well-wishers are determined to help her nurses to carry on the noble. work which she began, and which, under her fostering care, became an important . factor in alleviating suffering in Christchurch. ' Appreciation of the work of the Nurse Maude District Nursing Association, which she founded, was shown in no half-hearted manner at the Durham Street Art Gallery last night, when about 500 guests attended a monster bridge party, held in aid of the funds of the association and to show their practical interest in the movement. Many who were unable to attend sent donations towards the fund. It was fitting that Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, whose wife, the late Lady Rhodes, was associated with Nurse, Maude at the beginning of her work and made it possible for her to establish her district nursing scheme, should be an honoured guest at the party and should present the prizes, which were won by Mrs, Scott-Baker and Mrs Adkin (contract bridge), Mesdames R. Nicholson, M. Hollander, and Clarence Holland (auction bridge), and’Mr Penny (500). The members of the organising committee were Lady Acland, Mesdames J.
