GOLDEN JUBILEE
CELEBRATIONS AT MOUNT MAGDALA The celebration of the golden jubilee of the founding of the Convent of the Good Shepherd,, at Mount Magdala, which was begun on Wednesday morning, was-continued on Saturday afternoon, when, at the invitation of the Sisters, many'friends attended an excellent entertainment given by; members of the Sacred Heart class, that is, the adults, of Mount Magdala. The concert hall, decorated with gold and white, was crowded, those present including his Lordship Bishop Brodie, Mr H. A. Young, S.M., and Mrs Young, Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., and Mrs Levvey, the Hon. William Hay ward and Mrs Hay ward. The programme opened with a jubilee march, followed by a song of welcome to the visitors. A pleasing item, described on the programme as "Angelic records with Vocal and Instrumental interludes," recalled with gratitude the work of the outstanding figures in the history of Mount Magdala—St. John of Ure, who founded the Order of the Good Shepherd, Father Ginaty, to whose zeal and unceasing toil Mount Magdala is a monument. Cardinal Moran, who laid the foundation stone, Archbishop Redwood,- Bishop Grimes and Bishop Brodie. V Two choruses, "Queen of Angels* and "Father in Heaven Above," were sung as entr'actes to the allegorical play, "Anima," an ambitious work with a large cast, including Anima or Life, Pride, the Pleasure of the senses—Sight, Taste, Smell, Hearing and Feeling—Despair, Revenge, and, on the other side of the picture Faith, Hope, Charity, Wisdom, Humility, Poverty^-Purity and Obedience. It was remarkably well presented and ended'with a striking tableau. At the fall of the curtain, Bishop Brodie complimented the girls on their clear enunciation, their reliable memories, and their excellent presentation of the play. He welcomed the visitors, whose'presence was, he said, an encouragement to the Sisters in their work, and expressed great pleasure that the two city magistrates, Mr Young and Mr Levvey, had shown their kindly interest by attending the gathering. Around them, he said, on the occasion of the jubilee of Mount Magdala, visitors saw signs of great material growth in the last 50 years, but what the Sisters valued most was the growth of .Virtue In those in their care. --■»»«...
