JUNIOR TENNIS TEAM

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS,

Sir,--lt w as with deep interest that I followed the controversy of the selection of the New Zealand junior tennis team, which is to visit Australia. It has since been proved that this logical criticism was more than justified, as it has been arranged, through the efforts of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association's management committee, to include Ivan Corich in the team. However, may I point out that despite the fact that all tennis enthusiasts [n Canterbury will be overjoyed to know that Corich has been given the chance he thoroughly deserves (and there appears to be quite a lew, ac cording to the correspondence columns), the problem is not yet completely solved, as finance is required to endorse the action of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association It was indeed very-gratifying to see that Canterbury tennis had such keen followers of the game as "Send the Best," "Disgusted," "Volley," "Double Fault," "Lover of Fair Play," "To See is to Believe," and "Enthusiast," and I do not think it is too much to assume that these sporting gentlemen will voluntarily assist the Canterbury association in a manner that is customary to keen sportsmen. . „_, In "The Press" this morning, Crosscourt" kindly gave an outline of the minimum finance necessary, and it is to be noted that the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association has opened a subscription list to raise the funds required. Now that these youths have the chance to learn tennis, as it should be played, in one of the three leading tennis countries of the world, it is more than reasonable to assume that, as they will have a limited amount at their disposal, they may miss the golden opportunity of obtaining extra professional coaching whilst in Sydney. would it not be sporting charity to give our Canterbury boys sufficient money to enjoy this privilege? Would it not mean the potential retaining of' the Wilding Shield in Canterbury for a few more years, and also to the building up of the nucleus for a Davis Cup team? To show my sincerity in this respect I reluctantly state that I voluntprily subscribed to the New Zealand ladies" team which visited Australia this sear son, and intend in like manner to help these promising young players. Can Canterbury?— Yours, etc., WILDING PARK. February 21, 1936.
