NORTH CANTERBURY

RANGIORA HURUNUI LICENSING COMMITTEE In an effort to gain further representation for Rangiora on the Hurunui Licensing Committee, the Mayor (Mr C. W. Tyler) and Messrs W. Smith and H. R. Taylor have been nominated as candidates for the election, which will take place on March 10. Only one member of the present committee represents the Rangiora district. Replying to .a request from the Rangiora Borough Council for the removal of the committee's headquarters from Amberley to Rangiora, the Department of Justice some time ago advised the holding over of the question until the triennial election next month. If more members are elected from Rangiora it is hoped that this matter will receive favourable consideration. Nominations will close on Wednesday.

Sports Postponed All sports fixtures in Rangiora were postponed oh Saturday because of the wet weather. Misty rain in the morning gave place to warm sunshine in the afternoon, but playing areas were still very wet. The series of matches for the Morgan pennant, which was to have been played by the North Canterbury Cricket Sub-Association's teams on Saturday, will now probably be played when the competition for the pennant is finished at the end of the ordinary competitions, which will resume next Saturday. Bowling and tennis teams from Aulsebrooks, Ltd., Christchurch, were to have visited Rangiora to play matches with teams from the United Club, but the trip had to be cancelled, as had also the visit of the Rangiora Tennis Club's team to Leeston. Dangerous Culverts Scoured by the abnormal volume of storm water last week, culverts on the road from Rangiora northwards over the upper Ashley bridge have been weakened, and motorists are warned to take care when crossing to keep in the centre of the roadway. A motorcar and a van have been in trouble m places where the approach has subsided under the weight of vehicles. The traffic inspector for the district. (Mr P. L. Rouse) said that red flags will soon be erected, but in the meantime motorists are warned not to attempt to pass on culverts..

Personal The Rev. C. Blair, of Karori, Wellington, paid a visit to Rangiora during the week-end, and was the guest of Mrs W. A. Rowse. He conducted the service at the Methodist Church yesterday morning. Mr and Mrs R. L. Jarman have returned to Rangiora from a holiday spent at Diamond Harbour. Mr E. J. D. Hercus, of Christchurch, conducted the services at the Rangiora Baptist Church yesterday.

A first offender for drunkenness was fined 10s, in default 24 hours' imprisonment, by Mr F. T. Ager, J.P., and Mr J. A. Edna May Oliver and James Gleason, that inimitable comedy team, are the stars. In order to captivate her grandfather, the Duke of Bridgewater (a confirmed womanhater), Dolly Haas masquerades as a boy. KAIAPOI A successful fete in aid of the Kaiapoi Methodist Church funds was held in the Sunday school on Saturday afternoon. The day was unfavourable for holding the function at Mr and Mrs L. B. Evans' residence "Rhyl." Kaiapoi, as was originally intended. There was a good attendance, and the various stalls and sideshows were well patronised. A cake, afternoon tea, and surprise packet stall was conducted by the Kaiapoi Methodist Ladies' Guild, a sweets stall by the Girls' Club, and a cake stall was also organised by the Clarkville Methodist Ladies' Guild.

I SOUTHBROOK The North Canterbury Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Club held the first of a series of socials in the Southbrook Coronation Hall on Saturday evening. The music was played by G. Holland's orchestra, and Mr J. Rigby played an extra. Mr F. Martyn was master of ceremonies. The first Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss M. Rudd and Mr W. Barnett, and Miss M. Hassell and Mr. R. Pulley won the second prize. The prizes for the euchre tournament were won by Mesdames G. Mortland and L. Moran and Messrs J. Watson and C. Pulley.

CHEVIOT The fortnightly meeting o£ the Loyal Cheviot Lodge was held in the Presbyterian Hall recently. The N.G., Bro. C, Dierck, presided. The sick visitors reported that Bro. V. Barnes was making satisfactory progress. P.G. Bro. J. Carson was presented with a PastGrand's certificate by LJVLP.G. Bro. C. L. Powis. Final arrangements were made for the visit of the Loyal Waiau Lodge members on February 29.

Golf Club The annual meeting of the Cheviot Golf Club was held in the Public Hall recently. The president, Mr G. R. Macdonald, presided. The balance-sheet, showed a credit balance of £29 4s. The annual report showed that the club had a successful season. The dry winter enabled the players to enjoy the sport and the links were in good order for most of the season. During the year women's and men's open tournaments were played, the men's tournament for the first time. The usual matches with neighbouring clubs were also played and enjoyed. Week-end competitions were played practically every Saturday, and the thanks of the members are due to Mesdames G. L. Rutherford, T. Edridge, Misses M. Sloss, S. Dampier-Crossley, R. Trolove, Messrs G. R. Macdonald, R. G. Westenra, J. Fleming, and Dr. L. H. Marwho gave special prizes. During the season a women's dressing room was erected at a cost of £ls. Special thanks were accorded to Mr D. McLaren for the use of his ground, and to Mr G. R. Macdonald for his a?sistance in preparing the links. Fuller; handicap and match committee, president, captain, and secretary. , The opening day was fixed for April 4. It was decided to hold a men's open tournament about the middle of May, and also a women's tournament about the same time.

WEST EYRETON A committee meeting of the CustWest Eyreton branch of the New Zealand Women's Division of the Farmers' Union was held at the residence of the. president, Mrs G. Cowens. Arrangements were made for a bring-and-buy garden party at the residence of Mrs C. Mcintosh on March 14. It was also decided to hold a chrysanthemum show in May in the Institute Hall, Cust. It was reported that the next meeting of the division will'be held on March 5 at the West Eyreton Hall, when a demonstration would be given by Mrs M. A. Ellen, of Woodend. A dainty supper was served by Mrs G. Cowens. ,

School Committee The West Eyreton School Committee held its monthly meeting on Monday. Those present were: Messrs R. W. Thompson (chairman), J. Creamer, L. Hide, W. Busch, and A. Chambers. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mr J. McLaughlan in the death of his father. •

HORNBY A meeting of the Hornby subrbranch of the New Zealand Plunket Society was held on Friday. Mrs J. Gundersen presided. The nurse's report for January was as follows:—Attendance at yboijis, 39 adults, 37 babies, and four pre-school children. Seventeen visits were made to homes in Upper Riccafton, Sockburn, Islington, and Russley road. >

LEE&TON Mr J. C. Chamberlain presided over a meeting of the committee formed to undertake organising work for a carnival which will be held on April 4 in aid of the Ellesmere Agricultural and Pastoral Association's funds. Mr W. H. Cartwright said that the school teachers in the district had agreed to co-operate and that children's sports would be held. It was decided to ask the Canterbury Cob and Pony Society to assist with the sports programme. It was also decided to seek the assistance of women's institutes, the women's division of the Farmers' Union and the Plunket Society. The assistance of the Ellesmere Brass Band is also to be sought.

Night Circle .A monthly meeting of the Leeston Night Circle was presided over by Miss R. Bowden. Mrs G. B. Couch, group convener, explained that the Night Circle should no longer be a junior ■branch ol the "Women's Institute, but should be an independent body. It was agreed that the circle should be continued under the name of the Leeston Night Circle Institute. One new member was elected. A demonstration on the making of sealing wax posies was given by Mrs Couch, who was accorded a vote of thanks. A competition for the most effective apron was won by Misses B. Ormandy, E. Hurford, and M. Brizzle equal 1, Mrs A. Fussell 2. A social hour was spent, at which Miss D. Savage, whose marriage will take place shortly, was the guest. Games and competitions were held. Miss Bowden conveyed the best wishes of members to Miss Savage and presented her with a lacquered bowl as a token of regard.

HORORATA The annual meeting of the Hororata Hall Committee was held in the hall. The balance-sheet, which was read and adopted, showed a very satisfactory credit, and the report said that minor improvements had been carried out during the year. The following committee was elected for the incoming year;— Messrs T. F. Hight (chairman), A. D. Oliver (secretary and treasurer), G. E. Cartwright, H. A. Thome, L. Derrett, E. Adams, and H. A. Oliver.
