PICNICS
Several large picnics which Vere to have, been held at the different beaches at Lyttelton during the 'last few days were postponed or abandoned because of the heavy rain. Three picnics were held on Saturday. The annual picnic of the Lyttelton Lodge of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes, which was to have been held at Southbridge yesterday, was postponed because of the effects of the rain. . ■ .
• Personal Mr A. Torrens, who has resigned from the clerical staff of the Harbour Board.to take up a Government position in Wellington, was met on Saturday morning by fellow members of the staff. Mr C. H. Clibborn, secretary of the board, on behalf of the staff, presented Mr Torrens with a shaving set and a writing set, and conveyed the good wishes of those present to him in his new appointment. Mr Torrens returned thanks. Summer Flower Show
The Mayor of Lyttelton (Mr F. E. Sutton) will open the St. Saviour's summer flower show at the. West Lyttelton Parish Hall to-morrow. The show is in aid of St. Saviour's Church funds, and will contain a number of stalls, including cakes, sweets, produce, and variety goods.
Swimming
The Lyttelton Men's Amateur Swimming Club and the Lyttelton Ladies' Swimming Club held events at Corsair Bay on Saturday afternoon. Entries in most of the events were small. Results: — Men's 50 Yards Backstroke Championship—P. Reardon 1, R. Klddey 2, A. Whitham 3. Time, 40 2-ssec. Four started. 100 Yards Freestyle Championship—W. Morris 1. T. Holder 2. P. Heardon 3. Time, 77 2-ssec. Six started. 33 1-3 Yards Handicap—l. Dromgople (ssec) 1. A. Whitham (3sec) 2, A. Erickson (lsec) 3. Eleven started.
Championship Dive—F. Dromgoole (43$ points) 1, P. Reardon (38J points) 2, I. Dromgoole (38 points) 3. Schoolboys' Race, 25 Yards—D. SZarsent (Bsec) 1, G. Carson (6sec) 2, J. Holder (lsec) 3. Women's 75 Yards Championship—Miss Jean Morris 1, Miss Peggy Duckworth 2. The only starters.
50 Yards Handicap—Miss Duckworth 1. Miss Mavis Gilray 2, Miss Jessie Gilray 3. 25 Yards Championship—Miss J. Gilray 1, Miss Ruth Madden 2, Miss May Sterne 3.
This evening, at 6.46, the Lyttelton Ladies' Swimming Club will hold a 150 yards handicap race for a trophy presented by Miss Mahar.
P. Reardon, a Lyttelton youth, and a member of the Lyttelton Men's Amateur Swimming Club, was successful In winning the handicap section of the Canterbury Swimming Centre's harbour race at Diamond Harbour yesterday.
