ITALIAN WOOL SUBSTITUTE
UNFAVOURABLE REPORT
(UWITBD £RBSS iSSOCIi-TIOH—COPt»IGIT.) LONDON, February 22. The Associated Press special Bradford correspondent says that the Wool Industries Research Association's report on Italian milk wool states that the appearance is similar to merino tops, except that there is no crimp. The difference is that the new fibre does not possess scales like wool and turns yellow and weakens in alkali. It swells lengthwise 7J per cent., compared with li in wool. When wet it also lacks elasticity and shows a greater affinity for acid dyes than wool. Moreover, it does not possess the characteristics abling it to compete with the natural wool, except in abnormal conditions. It may be mixed with cotton and rayon and produce cheap cloth for Italy in the present economic circumstances. It is an interesting technical achievement, but does not bring nearer the molecular structure with all the properties of wool.
