"MAN AND WOMAN"

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir,—Your correspondent; "Eve" will, I hope, pardon me the delay in replying to her. It was not quite my in 7 t'ention to discuss'the question in' a sex-equality sense. I hold that whatever advancement woman has gained she has gained at the expense of man. Whether or no she is capable of sustaining and administering life in more noble fashion Jhan has he, remains unproved. The evidence before us reveals danger spots placed to the imminent hazard of thfepoet's "sweet love." May I ask. "Eve" in turn, were it better to retain that selfish, isolating, and estranging motive called sex-love or to slay it,> brutally if need be, a votive offering to :,that greater; benefactor,: human --service?. Then again 1 am' somewhat impatient with society's demands. . For most of them there is little iJKyme or reason beyond women's desire and will for unnecessary adornment. It is that same weakness which has in large measure given rise to civilisation as we know it; that has produced, at the cost of the human soul, conditions of such disarray and miasma that purging of the human conglomerate has become imperative to its persistence in the scheme of things. May I say to "Eve" and her sisters that when.more attention is paid to the drawing closer of their ties than to the unloosing of them, we may reasonably hope to breathe purer air. In the interim, however, it is the male I would bestir to some semblance of masculine pride. For this reason my challenge was addressed to commercial leadership: It is in that sphere that masculine supineness is most evident. It is there that procuration is most blatantly carried on.—Yours, etc., F. W. HEAL. February 21, 1536.
