Penelope and McHeath, members of J. S. Shaw's team, have credited several wins to.their respective owners, Messrs '*.-J, ; M; Samson and W. A. Lands, but in the case of Violenta it was the mare's first win since she'was purchased last October by Mr M. Dawson, of Dunedin. Violenta is a member of J. W. Jennings s team, and after her prominent running on the first day of the Dunedin meeting her success, undoubtedly would be well appreciated. Mr Dawson has not figured as an owner of gallopers previously, but he is well known in the light harness sport. J. Henderson, of Oamaru, was the previous owner of Violenta.' Form at Wtotom ; On the form disclosed in the steeplechase at the Diamond Jubilee meeting of the Winton Jockey Club, .Southland appears to have at least two or three aspirants to Grand National honours. The winner, Trisox, gave a brilliant display of jumping and showed more than average pace on the flat. Dunmure ?att a h sr«af race .ior his first start after, a-Jong spelt He looked reaUy well and aiyjther successful season cahbe predicted for the Southland crack, " Paraisiihg also came into the category of national aspirants. He had done a lot of work but apparently was not quite up to concertpitch, and he was asked to cover a lot of unnecessary ground. This did not help his chances. Red Lance ran a good race for second | money, and is a prospective winner.' Ecclefechan was going well until he j fell at the last fence, and the mistake cost him second money. It was o most promising field and Southland should be represented when the big jumping events come up for decision in the north. '_ , The Riccarton-trained Penelope won the Flying Handicap in a tight finish after leading all the way. The South Canterbury-trained colt, Coat oi Arms, won the Novice Stakes in another close finish, and paid a great price for a form horse. , it __. . Trivet set a solid pace in the Wmton Cup, and although she had to be kept up to her work in the straight, the issue was never in doubt. The favourite McHeath. gave a sluggish display. Latest Juvenile Winner Birthday Party, who won the Sapling Stakes at Woodville yesterday, is owned and was bred by Mr T. H. Lowry, and Is trained by F. W. Davis, at Woodville. She is by Gainscpurt ' from Marlon's Birthday, by Psychology from D'Oro,: a full sister to Desert Gold, who produced Oreum, the dam j of Gold Hod, the winner of this season's A J.C. Breeders' Plate and the Federal Stakes. The runner-up to Birthday Party was Silver River, a gelding by Roydon from Starmist, by Autumnus .'from Stardancer, by Martian—Stepdancer. Silver. River was bred by Mr A. Louisson, of Christchurch, and was sold as a yearling Jo J Mrs C? Haldane, of Hawke's Bay. Another For Australia According' to some North Island reports Mala was to. have been raced next at the Auckland meeting, but such is not the case. His owner-trainer HL E. Russell, has stated that the Lackham—Lucretia colt hashean eased up since he won at Trentham last month, and that his next start, will be in Australia in the spring. Horseman Injured When schooling Parasang on the Invercargill track on .Wednesday morning. A. J. Peart suffered injuries which will keep him out of the saddle for a few weeks.. Apparently Parasang crashed through the first obstacle, dislodging Peart, who had two ribs broken and also received injuries to his head. St. Leger Candidate Since going into the charge of J. M. Cameron the Siegfried three-year-old. Happy-Landing, has "shown steady inV provement, and there was no fluke about his win at Wanganui. Though on that occasion he had only the narrowest of margins at the finish from Donegal and Nightlass, the solid manner 4n which he finished was impressive. With 8-2 he is not harshly treated in the Champion Hack Cup at Te Aroha, where the mile and a quarter journey should suit him admirably. As he is engaged in the St Legers. his showing at Te Aroha will be watched with interest, for many good judges have a high- opinion of the cpJU.

Answer to Correspondent gelding, but last season a colt, (b) Top Coat started in the Harcourt Gold Cup of 1934. Gallop in the Dark Blue Tiger, winner of the Oringi High-weight Handicap at Woodville yesterday, did his final gallop on Thursday in rather unusual circumstances, and his case serves to'illustrate further that the. watch is not always a reliable guide to a horses prospects. When he went out to gallop on Thursday the Woodville course was enveloped in fog, so much so that it was impossible to see any of the posts. Blue Tiger's task was six furlongs on I the course proper, and his jockey was Ben Kowhai, a Maori lad, whose instructions from B. Goodman were to yell as he approached the six-furlong barrier. He was soon • swallowed up by the fog, and the watch-holders waited in silence. Nothing happened for so long that it seemed as if he had lost his way. Kowhai, however, knew what he was doing and that as long as he did not hit a fence he was still somewhere on the course. He cautiously felt his way through the fog, but as soon as something loomed, up in the fog he dug both heels in and let out an ; ear-splitting screech, which must have been heard for miles. Blue Tiger, thoroughly startled, put his ears back and went for his life. Some time later the drum of galloping hoofs was heard at the bottom of the straight and Blue Tiger, flat out, flashed past the post, being clocked to run the six furlongs in lmin 33sec. The watches were within a second or so of each other. The times had to be believed nearly correct, but later it was ascertained that the first object Kowhai had spotted in the fog was one of Jtfie plough marks, the best part of a furlong before the six-furlong barrier, TROTTING NOTES Bracketed on the Totalisator Bracketed horses at New Brighton to-day incuude:—< . Change of Stables Ciro, who has been racing well but unluckily in the > colours of Durbar Lodge, Ltd., has: how joined L. A. Maldens's team; and he will be bracketed with Peter Locanda in the principal event at New Brighton to-day. Ciro is by Wrack—Pearlchfld and in the matter he has everything to hfin. j An Outsider" ! ' Wilbur: White, on anything he has done :inme years, appears to tattcftftitf tha years as .-a trotter, and his supporters at New Brighton are entitled to a big dividend ■■ : ;'.;'''V . J : . A Promising Filly . V. Leeming has in hand a nice filly, Diversion, by Bey de Oro from Escapade, and her engagement in the Belfast Handicap to-morrow will not be altogether forgotten after the reasonably <jood support accorded her at the recent Wellington meeting. Diversion is a very promising juvenile, likely to make good in the near future. Her dam, Escapade, was one of the best trotters New Zealand has known. Well Bred Cyrano, a starter in the Belfast Handicap at New Brighton to-morrow, is a three-year-old gelding by Wrack— Nantwich, a product of Durbar Lodge. Buddy's Engagement Buddy, at one time trained at New Brighton by W. Warren, is now trained by C. K. Yeatman. At one time this gelding showed promise of developing into a pacer above the average. Peter' Silk Peter Silk, engaged in the Belfast Handicap at New Brighton to-day, is a four-year-old gelding by Silk Thread from Queen's Own, and was bred by her present owner, Mr D. Spence. Queen's Own was a fine race mare, hut so far has failed to leave anything approaching her own class. . luck of the Draw The luck of the draw, at the barrier might have a big influence in the result of races at New, Brighton to-day. Unfortunately for stay-at-home backers and many others who like to study an easy programme, the trotting authorities will not allow the draw for positions to be published. At the mile and a half post it is possible to place a big number of horses on the front line, but a position on the outside means covering much extra ground. At times a horse in the second row has a big advantage over others in the front line.

NEWBRiGH'Sroir ' T.O. ' TO-DAY'S PROGRAMME The New Brighton Trotting Club's summer meeting will be held to-day, but although the weather may be fine the course proper is likely to be heavy. The fields all through are well up to the average in the matter of numbers and quality, and interesting racing is assured. Special arrangements have been made by the Christchurch Tramways Board for the conveyance of racegoers to and from .the course, and as the first race will not start until 1 p.m. every opportunity will be given business people to attend. The day's programme is as follows; 1 p.m.— IMPROVERS' HANDICAP, of 130 sovs. Unhoppled trotters. 3min 49sec class. One mile and a half. Beethoven . • scr Royal Parrish. scr Bellerina .. scr San Michele'.. scr Demesne .. scr Sylvan , ..scr Dolores Silk .. scr Winnow :. scr Gay Crusader scr Bon Chance .. 48 Isis ..scr Cracksman ..48 Master Wrack scr Great Wood .. 60 Moerangl .. scr Mother's Boy 60 Princess Marie scr Fairy Brooks .. 132 Few of the trotters engaged in the Improvers' Handicap have any public form to recommend them, and although more than half the field will start from the limit, some of the handicapped horses may be preferred. Cracksman, on 48 yards behind, gave a good display when he won the Mitcham Handicap on Boxing Day in 3min 29 4-ssec, and he is a better stayer than Bon Chance, on the same mark. Hoyal Parrish has raced consistently without winning, and San Michele and Winnow have shown speed. The public will give most consideration to the chances of Cracksman, Bon Chance, and Boyal Parrish. 1.40 p.m.— BELFAST HANDICAP, of 130 sovs. 3min 43sec class. One mile and a half. Ann Pointer ~ scr Maltravers .. scr Bombay Girl .> scr Monetary ..scr Buddy ... scr Native Son .. scr Canadian Passport .. scr Prince scr Peter Silk ..scr Chateau .. scr Precious Metal scr Chieftainess ..scr Pukeuri ..scr Credit Funds' scr Reymere .. scr Cyrano .. No horse engaged has so far enjoyed any outstanding success, but several have shown promise. Credit Funds was twice run-ner-up to Ace Pot at the Oamaru Jockey Club's meeting on January 2, and at non-totalisator meetings held in North Canterbury King's Drive won three races. Golden Miller, Lucky Jack, Shrewdy, and Passport are all improving, and possibly the favourites will be Credit Funds, King's Drive, and Shrewdy. 2.15 p.m.— DENTON MEMORIAL HANDICAP, of 300 sovs. 4min 36sec class. Two miles. Gunmetal ..scr Colonial Boy 24 Isabel Derby scr De Soto .. 24 Lady Fame .. scr Prairie King .. 36 Morella .. scr Reporter .. 36 Prince Author scr Guy Junior .. 48 Real Burton ..scr Homeward .. 48 Tangatu .. scr Peter Locanda 48 Wilbur White 6cr Little Nelson .. 60 Ciro .. 12

Lady Fame has raced very consistently of late, and her double victory at Forbury.Park, following a sterling effort over a mile and a half at Addington, entitles her to respect in any class of race. The journey should not be too far for her, and though Isabel Derby has disappointed in latest engagements, she is better than her running suggests. Of the other limit horses Tangatu has the brightest prospects, but De Soto, on 24 yards, is a good pacer. Prairie King will be well suited by a soft track. Guy Junior is a good, genuine ..pacer, and at home over any distance. In a good betting race the favourites should be Lady Fame, Guy Junior, and Tangatu. 2,50 p.m.— STEWARDS' HANDICAP, of 140 sovs. 3min 39sec class. One mile and a half. Alpine Prince scr Red Flush .. scr Big Nelson .. scr Rewal .. scr Cam Dillon .. scr Reylena .. scr Carageen .. scr Vanity Fair .. scr Celebrity,. .. scr Wheat Pool .. scr Civic .. scr Brigadier .. 12 Cream Our Fay .. 12 Harvester scr Our War .. 12 Dual .. scr Plutus ..12 Eastern Prince scr Fortex .. 36 Glorietta .. scr Purveyor .. 36 Lottie Guy .. scr Southern Smile 36 Fortex. is set to give away 36 yards in the Stewards' Handicap and, an improving young pacer, this may not be beyond him. He has a big task in front of him, and posibly speculators will prefer seme of the limit horses. Of this division Carrageen will have friends, but he has disappointed more than once. Celebrity is a speedy young pacer of promise. Dual is solid, and Purveyor has prospects. The best may be Carrageen, Celebrity, and £ur Fay. 3.25 p.m.— ECLIPSE HANDICAP, of 160 sovs. 2min 50sec class. One mile and a quarter. All Sunshine .. scr Aristotle .. 12 Golden Cross scr Editor .. 12 Marie Celeste scr Gunmetal .. 12 Margaret Bell scr Morello .. 12 Nobleman .. scr Wise Guy .. 12 Rongomai .. scr Young Travfs 24 Royal Sylvia Sydney 38 Comrade scr With a short limit of 30 yards', the Eclipse Handicap promises a good race. Nobleman's forward running at Addington on Saturday has brought him into favour, and he will not be troubled by soft going. Rongomai is improving, but may prefer a firm track, and Wise Guy and Aristotle cannot be recommended on their latest form. Young Travis has some good performances to his credit, and he should be prominent throughout. The places may be filled by Young Travis, Noblem»n. and Marie Celeste. 4 p.m.— AUTUMN HANDICAP, of 150 sovs. Unhoppled trotters, 4mln 55sec class. Two miles. Don Giovanni scr Fairy Brooks 36 Harvest Dillon scr Lady Sonoma «36 Kippagh .. scr Little Reta .. 60 Ohinemutu .. scr Silk Coat .. 60 Prince ' Ann Parrish .. 72 Harvester scr Isabel Patch ~ 72 Sister Mary .. scr The unhoppled trotters in the Autumn Handicap do not include any champions, and those with form to recommend them are well back in the handicap. Kippagh is a solid plodder when the speed is not too fast, and Sister Mary has previously shown ability to handle the big New Brighton track. Fairy Brooks, may handle the going well, and Lady Sonoma may improve on her Addington showing. The best prospects are held by Sister Mary, Kippagh, and Lady Sonoma.

Hidden Charm won so well at Wellington that he must be regarded as a possible winner, and the chances of Ace Pot, Oversight, Play On, Trireme, and Loretta cannot be overlooked. Trireme, Hidden Charm, and Casanova are likely place-fillers. 5.10 p.m.— FINAL HANDICAP (in saddle), of 150 sovs. 2min 17sec class. One mile. Of the limit horses the best may be Directum, Gay Sister, and Belle Derby, and Young Frank and Grand Mogul, both of whom showed form at the recent meeting at Addington, must command respect. The best fancied may be Grand Mogul, Directum, and Gay Sister. WAIKATO K.C. TE RAPA PROGRAMME (THE PRESS Special Service.)
