ATHLETICS

MATTHEWS B)fiitJEN BY a< - ' ' BOOT CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIPS ■ s t • .Begin'' ■ -' - --■ C; H. Matthews was beaten by, -the young university runner, .V. £. Boot, in the mile championship of Canterbury on the Lancaster Park, traok last evening. This was the one surprise among the opening 'events of the Canterbury amateur athletic championships, and establishes Boot as a- definite prospect for the ' national ■ title at DunediA next Week. Boot ran a welljudged race-in 4min 26 2-ssec—wonderful time on a track out of which water was oozing continually. His performance in this race suggested that he could run the distance in time even less than 4min 20sec. The heavy track and cold atmosphere

hindered Matthews, who is essentially a fine-weather and fast-track runner. He made a-hot pace all the way to the last bend; then Boot came out from his position a yard or two behind and, with a powerful sprint, passed him with ease. Matthews did not try to go with Boot. He obviously had his mind on the three miles to-day and was unwilling to take up the cudgels at the finish. It is questionable to whom the race would have gone had he not given it up. Apart from this race there w?s nothing of great interest in the meeting, though times on the sodden track were all good. T. G. Broadway (Canterbury), won his heat of the quarter-mile comfortably from D. H. Oldfield (University) in 51 4-ssec. H. C. McCaskey, the Canterbury champion, returned the same time in beating G. H. Geddes (University) in the second heat. A great race is promised for to-day. J. B. MacFarlane (Old Boys) was definitely superior in his heat of the 220 yards, | beating his field In 23 l-ssee. J. V. Carmichael (University) showed good form in winning his heat in 23 2-ssec, and E. P. Newburgh (Canterbury) won his in 24sec. G. Busfield (Sydenham), who finished a strong second to' Newburgh, was extreme* ly unlucky in not qualifying for the final to-day. In the two miles walk F. W. Dukes nearly lapped his field with a typically solid performance. The heats of the 220 yards hurdles were won by -E. P. Newburgh, and the other by J, D. Nelligan, who should meet to-day in a great race for the title. A. T. Anderson (University) was going well in his race with Nelligan when he fell near the finish, but completed the course and qualified for the final.

The broad jump and junior high jump events had to be postponed until ,to-day because of the weather. The programme this afternoon is to start at 2 o'clock.
