Mr McCabe said that the sub-asso-ciation hoped the council would give them a tenure over six acres of an area which had formerly been endowed for cricket, but which, some years ago, had been taken over by the council. Conditions were not suitable at Cass square for cricket matches. Mr Harper said that the association was conducting a very good cricket competition this year and with increased interest being shown in tne game, the. time was opportune for providing further facilities for the sport. The Mayor said the reserves committee would see what could be done. Flood Waters A deputation from the Hokitika Harbour Board waited on the borough council about the escape of water from ' the borough in times of flood. The deI putation consisted of Messrs M. Houston (chairman), J. J. Mcintosh, and E. W. Heenan. , , .. . Mr Houston said he understood that the boroutrh foreman had prepared a plan of a scheme to permit the water to escape into the river at Tancred street, the cosJt being approximately £SO. Alternative schemes would probably be more costly. It was a question of whether the expenditure was warranted. ' ... The Mayor said the proposal might mean the saving of damage to wharf property if another big flood occurred. He thought the council would be prepared to spend £25. Mr Heenan stressed the need for taking careful levels before deciding on a particular scheme. It was decided to defer decision until levels had been taken. Rubbish Dump The Harbour Board's deputation to the Hokitika Borough Council requested the council to remove its rubbish dump from the present site near the tip.' ' ' ' ' ■ Mr Houston said the Harbour Board considered that the dump should' be closed; it was a menace. Rubbish was dumped everywhere as there was no proper supervision. If the site were cleaned up a very pleasant walk could be made. The Mayor said the council would probably have difficulty in finding an-, other dumping site, but would consider the matter. School Picnics The Cobden School picnic was held at Lake Mahinapua in glorious sunshine. Travelling by the same tram was a large gathering from Paroa School, which held its picnic at Hokitika. Mothers' Union There was a large attendance of members at the meeting of the Mothers' Union. Mrs W. E. D. Davies opened with prayer. The Rev. W. E. D. Davies presided. , , . ; The report Ot last year's work, and ' balance-sheet were presented. The election, of officers resulted as follows:—President. Mrs W. E. D. Davies; vice-presidents, Mesdames Chesterman and Smith; secretary and treasurer. Mrs W. Brown; committee, Mesdames Appleton, Stuart, Harper, Moore, Hart, and Evans font roll secretary, Mrs Moore; hospital visiting secretary, Mrs Bennett; secretary of Jubilee celebrations, Mrs Stuart. A discussion took place on the best method of assisting at the Chrysanthemum Show, and it was decided that the Mothers' Union support the holding of tea rooms and produce. It was also decided to give the ewer for the font in the new church in memory of John Barry Davies. '•-,.." Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Chesterman, Hart, and Brown. Tennis Sub-Association It is proposed to form a Tennis SubAssociation with headquarters at Hokitika, and a meeting to discuss the proposal.is to fee held next week. Presentation On the eve of his departure for Invercargill, Mr T. Cagney.was met by the staffs in the Government Buildings, when Mr C. H. Morrison, Chief

Surveyor, presented him, for those present, with a travelling case. References were made to the esteem In which Mr Cagney was held, not only by the staffs, but also by the Crown tenants.'' Marks, organising secretary of the British and Foreign Bible Society, is a visitor to Reefton. Mr McLean, of Wellington, is at present in Reefton. Mr Les Watson has left for Christchurch, where he will attend the Training College. The Weather , The dry weather at present being experienced in Reefton is causing the local authorities some concern* The town water supply is very low and the county engineer has requested the residents to conserve tile water as much as possible.
