RAILWAY FOOTBRIDGE

Because of the heavy cost, the New Zealand Railways Board isnot able.to provide a footbridge over the Rangiora railway yards to connect the two parts of Blackett street The Rangiora High , School Board of .Governprs, which supported the application of the Rangiora Borough; Council for a bridge, because of the danger to children, has received a letter from the General Manager (Mr G. H. Mackley), in which it was stated that the construction of a bridge three feet wide, would cost about £BSO. An assurance that special care was taken when shunting was being carried' out was given in the letter, and Mr Mackley said that a request had been made to keep a clear passage for children arriving by the morning train. A special watch would also be kept in the afternoon. If the High School Board desired, it could be arranged for children to cross the yards at specified times, and, if this were done, the anxiety that existed would be, entirely removed,. Mountaineering and Tramping Club About 10 members of the Rangiora Mountaineering and Tramping Club made an excursion to the Oku&u river yesterday, and spent an enjoyable day tr&mping over the surrounding hills. North Canterbury Gun Club Called for Saturday evening, the annual'meeting of the North Canterbury Gun Club lapsed for want of a quorum, there being only four members present. This is the first time in the history of the club that the annual meeting has lapsed. It will now be held next Monday. Yankee Tennis Tournament In the finals of the men's and women's yankee tournaments, played by members of the United Tennis Club on Saturday afternoon, R. Edlin beat C. Arnott, 20-19, and Miss D. Tyler beat Miss P. Benjes, 21-ia. Personal Mr W. Maunder, who has received a. Government position at Templeton, was presented with a copy of the new Methodist Hymn Book by the choir and the Young Men's Bible Class of the . Rangiora Methodist Church last evening. Mr C. S. Ayers made the presentation. Regent Theatre "Our Little Girl," Shirley Temple's great film success, will be presented to-morrow at the Regent Theatre (Town Hall), Rangiora. The special after-school session will begin at 3 o'clock, to enable school children to see "Our- Little Girl" in the afternoon. The evening session will begin at 8 o'clock. Oh Thursday evening, the startling mystery thriller, "Chinatown Squad," will be shown. Stealing through Chinatown's shadows and alleyways goes the spirit of adventure and thrills. All sorts-of queer happenings occur in this shadowy underworld. This is a mystery film of the highest quality. The stars are Lyle Talbot, Valerie Hobson, and Itugh O'Donnell. MEDBURY An enjoyable dance was organised by the entertainments committee In theJMedbury Public Hall in aid of the _ Hurunui Turt Club. There was a good attendance, visitors froo*, Christchurch and surrounding districts besides local; residents being present," Mr M. Bainford (Hurunui) was the winner of a competition. Music was played by Mrs H. S. Ginders. with extras by Mrs E. G. Dalzell, Mr T. McKie (Hurunui), and Mr F. Wright (Hawarden). Mr A. V. Dalzell was the master of ceremonies. KAIAPOI The majority of business places in Kaiapoi observed a holiday on Saturday for the Kaiapoi Woollen Mills' annual picnic outing. About 300 employee!? of the mills and their friends were conveyed by special train to Timaru, where a pleasant day was spent. Bowls A progressive rinks bowling tournament was held on the Kaiapoi Working Men's Club green on Saturday, five rinks from the Kaiapoi Working Men's Club and five rinks from the Belfast Club taking part. The tournaihetit was won by the Kaiapoi Working Men's Club rink, Piki, Anderson, Shepherd, Mealings (s). Noble, McAllister, Bristow, Monk (s) of the same club were second.

CHEVIOT A meeting of the Cheviot Miniature Rifle Club was held in the Public Hall, Cheviot, recently. The president, Mr D. Fraser, presided. The secretary was instructed to write to Tisdalls, Ltd., for a quotation for rifles and ammunition. The following were appointed as a subcommittee to deal with.the necessary alterations at the show-shed, and to wait on the Cheviot Agricultural and Pastoral Association about the range: —Messrs D. Fraser, A. Williamson, R. ' Williamson, and F. E. Flute. It was decided to write to Mr J. Campbell, Christchurch, and endeavour to arrange for a concert party to visit Cheviot on March 4. Personal The Misses Molly and Gertie Fitzgibbon, Spotswoqd, who have been spending a month's holiday in Stratford and New Plymouth, have returned home. ...---.. Misses R. Moore and O. SOUfHBROOK The Rangiora Amateur Athletic Club held the last of a ■ series of socials in the Southbrook Coronation Hall , dn Saturday evening, when there was \ a large attendance, including visiting swimmers from the Phillipstown Club, Christchurch. Music was played by G. Holland's orchestra, and Mr F. Martyn was master of ceremonies. The winners of the Monte Carlo waltz were Miss R. McQuillan and Mr R. Walton, while the Monte. SHEFFIELD The members of the Sheffield Women's and Men's Hockey Clubs held a very enjoyable social gathering in the Oddfellows' Hall, Sheffield, Recently, to honour Mr Leslie Hawke, the captain of the men's team, whose marriage will take place this week. The evening passed Very pleasantly with dancing, competitions, and games, much fun being caused by indoor hockey, which proved very popular. After supper Mr A. Petrie spoke of Mr Hawke's enthusiasm and interest in the clubs. Mr Hawke on several occasions has captained the Malvern hockey team. For those present Mr Petrie asked the guest of honour'to accept an electric iron with their best wishes for the future.
