GILES WINS ALL TITLES

, -'cHAjApibjisHiipS-C: '•

ENGLISH PARK

His brilliant speed, combined with clever tactics and plenty of staying power, made' the Canterbury amateur cycling titles comparatively easy for G. R. Giles, the Technical cyclist, at the English Park stadium on Saturday night. Riding cleverly over both long and short distances and thrilling the crowd with his trium- , phant sprints down the straight, fhe beat ! F. J. Grtise. the former champion'; in every | event., , * ' Giles and Grose were together 1n a "series of tactics and speed which roused the* efitmisiasm of the crowd. Both were, loudly cheered as they came. up the straight in each final dash. Giles was just too r fa,st for Grose every time, but the former national champion/ .always popular with the spectators, received equal applause. Because of the use of

tactics, and also because the pacemakers | were not quite fast enough, the times recorded were not as good as might have been expected. At the New Zealand championships in Wanganui next week the two should ride even better, and if Giles can reproduce his speed m he should triumph in the sprints. The meeting on Saturday evening was the first of a series of combined athletic and cycling fixtures which it is intended to hold at the stadium. The number of spectators was an improvement on last week, and when the public becomes' aware of the quality of the racing to be seen there it should increase rapidly. The evening was warm, the tracks in good order, and everything in favour of the competitors. -Olympic Distances The cycling programme consisted of the new series of events adopted by the New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association to conform to Olympic standards. The first event, the 1000 metres time trial, had been held earlier in the week. Giles recording brilliant time—lmln' 17 3-ssec. With this title already to his credit he set out to win all the remaining three—the 1000 metres sprint, three miles, and 10 miles, and in doing so proved conclusively that he has ample staying power as well as brilliant speed. In the 1000 metres sprint the crowd did not at first understand the tactics of the. competitors. In this event two riders met in each heat. The one on the inside 1 took-the first lap. and on the secondthey engaged in a battle of tactics to obtain positions for the final sprint, starting 220 yards from the winning post. The ; time was taken only for the last 200 yards, according to the Continental style. After a series of interesting heats and semi-finals Giles and Grose were together in a great duel in the final. Grose led over the first lap, and after passing the stand they slowed down and fought for positions as they gradually advanced to the 220 yards mark. From there Giles shot into the lead and held an advantage all the way, winning by three-quarters of a length. At first the crowd did not understand Ms tactics and voiced disapproval, but when Ihe system of the race was explained they were quick to,| appreciate the performance. i Faster Finish In the three miles and the 10 miles championship Giles and Grose were again together. There was a strong field, indudta? «ich R B. Blakeway, E W. Stevens. J. Campbell, and C. E. Hall, but from the point of view of the spectators there were again only two starters in it. This time Giles produced his brilliant sprint up the straight again and rode pasf the finish a length and a quarter ahead of Grose, with Hall in ■third place. The time was 6min 58 The 10-mile event, the last on the programme, in which the riders had to do 40 laps, brought the same competitors together again. Giles and Grose, were directly behind the pacemaker most of the time . and travelled at a steady 26 miles an hour. Grose was unlucky on the last lap, getting boxed in just when he wanted to get out. Giles jumped well ahead in the back straight and went on to lead all the way. When Grose extricated himself from the tangled field he put in a brilliant sprint to challenge Giles, but he was still half a length behind as the crowd cheered Giles past the finishing post. It was a fitting finish to a thrilling race and a good evening's sport. Outstanding Junior The lunior events on the programme were the one and three miles, in which D. R. Edwards, a Papanul rider of exceptional promise, was outstanding. He beat G. L. Thomson, of Rangiora, by a length in the mile, which he covered in 2min Msec, and then in the three miles he left his field standing, going away with the pacemakers to lap the other riders once and finish a lap and three-quarters ahead of them. His time for the race, 6min'sl 2-ssec. was faster than the figure recorded in the open championship. The five athletic handicap events on the programme produced some interesting racing. The- most interesting race was the mile.' won' by V. P. Boot, who from a handicap of 15 yards ran the distance in time equivalent to 4min 30sec for the full mile.
