SUBSIDY TO ITALIAN SHIPPING

CONTINUED PAYMENT BY SOUTH AFRICA

CAPE TOWN, February 13. Questioned in Parliament the Prime Minister (General Hertzog) said that the Government would continue to pay a subsidy to Italian lines under the shipping agreement. South Africa could rely on the assistance of other members of the league only if she joined in collective action. A member of the league against whom measures were adopted which were not recommended by the League Council would have legitimate reasons for. complaining. The Government saw no- reason for starting to play a lone hand in taking steps which were not recommended. None of the recommendations for the application of sanctions had a bearing on the subsidy to Italian shipping.
