NORTH BEACH BUS ROUTE
TO THB BDITOB 07 TIB FBBSB. Sir.—l read with interest the report in Thursday’s paper, “No Board of Appeal.” It seems to the writer that the Mayor of New Brighton (Mr E. L. Smith) is taking too much on himself when he makes the statement to the Minister for Transport, the Hon. R. Semple, that the logical route has been discontinued, thus depriving many people of transport. It would appear that the. Mayor wishes the trolley-bus service to be discontinued and the Wainoni route petrol bus installed. In this Mr Smith is speaking without consulting, the wishes of the travelling public of North Beach. I notice that the Minister for Transport requested the Mayor to forward an appeal and petition to him. If this means that Mr Smith Is advocating the reinstatement of the petrol bus and the discontinuance of the trolley-bus, it is time that the residents of North Beach woke up and took some action. I have travelled by both services and there is no comparison in regard to comfort of travelling. One can read a paper, etc., on the trolley-bus, but in the petrol bus this is impossible. The Mayor states that 12 families will have to leave the district because of the absence of suitable transport. Well, I can assure the Mayor that If the trol-ley-bus is discontinued there will be another house vacant in the district. I think the landlords should sit up and take notice, otherwise they may find themselves with empty houses. Trusting the users of the trolley-bus service will take some action, and not let the Mayor be spokesman for them. —Yours, etc., TROLLEY-BUS USER. February 14, 1936.
