Restricted' Numbers The Dunedin Club was unfortunate in having two small fields on Thursday, otherwise a much more substantial totalisetor_ I turn over would baVe been reeoMed. The pool for the Champagne Stakes last year was £2225,105, and this year it. was £194 10s, and the day's figures were up £503. To-day there will be again two restricted fields, the hurdle race and gold cup race; but the latter may*be a good betting medium,, as each of the four acceptors will command attention. Judicial Action Some interference took place during the running of the concluding-event at Wingatui on Thursday, and an enquiry Into the matter will bfe held this morning; It is interesting to note that A. E. Ellis will not be involved he did hot have % ride In the race. Successful Pali? The combination Silver Ring-Silver Streak has landed double honours on three' occasions during - the last few months; It won the Metropolitan and Members’ Handicap on the flnalday oJE the New Zealand Cup meeting, , the Wellington Racing Club Handicap and Metropolitan Handicap, on ffie second, day of the Wellington Cup meeting last month, and the Dunedin Cup and"Publicans* Handicap on Thursday. Silver Streak, who cost 55 guineas, as a yearling, has won nearly £4OOO in stakes and is good for a lot more yet. Not Bis First A. E. fcllis, who won the Dunedin Cup on Thursday, rode Loughrea to victory 12 years ago. , Another Record Mr W. E. S. Knight, who was at Wingatui on Thursday, saw his first Dunedin Cup On the Pprbury course in 18t5; when'Templeton won. Since that year Mr Knight has missed seeing the Cup run only on three occasions. ; Back to His Best * Silver Ring’s condition when paraded for the Dtinedin Cup on Thursday wasthe* subject of much (favourable com* ment, and there Wefe many who Were ' encouraged to support him after they saw him in his preliminary. It is safe to say that he Is better now than at any previous stage of his career, and weight does not seem to trouble him. Another trip to Sydney is certain to be undertaken with him, and although he wiU now ha highly assessed by. the*. Australian handicappers he should cofo) lect soma of the big autumn handicaps. . The crowd gave her a very mixed reception as she ran past the stands. The case of a staunch favourite being left standing at the dispatch does not often occur in galloping events,, and Knockfln’s failure to give her supporters arun fot tbeir money deprived the race of much public interest., ‘ 1 Fast Tlmea at Wiffgaitul In addltiott-to Silver Ring and Silver Streak making hew tlmd-records for Wingatui on Thursday, CustCSv ln Covering six futlongs in imitt 14s®c, put up a race record for the Champagne Stakes, the previous best time; Imitt, 14 3-9 sec, being credited to Goblin Market in 1&£ Gustos gave L. J. Ellls his second success in the classic, his previous win being on Pink Coat in 1029. A Changed Role An old rule of the English Jockey Club thdt stood for a long stretch Of years- was that which declared, nominations void on the death of the owner. This rule was not revoked until some few years ago. The death of Lord Rosebery in 1929, which led to the voiding of Midlothian’s nomination for the Derby, could be cited as the> most pointed case that led to the old rule’s being deleted and the adoption of one .more in keeping with the spiritof the times. The new rule reads: "Entries and subscriptions shall not become void on the death of the person in whose name they are made or taken, and all rights, privileged, and llabillties that could have attached to the deceased person had he or she. been alive shall attach to his or her personal representatives.” Therefore the nominations that figured in the name of King George still Stand., Three horses from the Royal engaged in the approaching Derby are Fadrey, by Pair-, way—Polish Air; Canvas, by Solaris— Scuttle; and Vitrics, by Bosworth— Stained Glass- •- Well-Earned Retirement Black Duke is likely to be retired after to-day’s race at Wingatui. Thursday’s - Win, raised, hid total number of starts to 210 and his record Is 47 Wins, 30 seconds, and 21 thlrd placings, for £8653 10s in stake money. Gloaming, Who hdlds the record for recording the most wins of any horse In New Zealand, won 57 races during his career, 47 -of them in New Zealand; and Black Suke will thus take over .that record ■'he.tfhduld' succeed again to-day. Reminders' ■ Nominations for the New Zealand Futurity Stakes, 1939, and the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, 1937, will close with the secretary of the Ashburton Trotting Club on Monday. . Nomination* for the Invercargill Trotting Club’* meeting, to be held on March 6 and 7, will close on WedneNominations for the Matinee meeting to be held by the Canterbury Owners and Breeders* Association on February 29 will bids* at the offices of H. Matson and Company on Monday, February 24. at 8 pan. New Zealand Bred There is interest for New Zealanders in toe race for championship honours at Perth for several of the leaders claim New Zealand strains of blood, and the actual-leader, Evicus, raced In the Dominion a few months ago.. Logan Derby, by Globe Derby, Is- a son of Belle Logan, oiie of a band of_ LOgan Pointer brood mares that are helping to make trotting history. The Logan Poirter strain is remarkable, in that it produces racehorses from apparently any breed. Frisco Lady, generally recognised as the champion of her years, is from Daisy Pointer, but in this case a great filly is descended from a.long line of successful strains. Silver de Oro, possibly .the fastest pacer .for her size ever raced in New Zealand, is another of the Logan Pointer breed and at practically every race meeting one or two winners from* the daughters of this sire appear. _ , New Derby, who, like Logan Derby, has nine points to his credit in the championship, is one of the Globe Derby stock, but her dam is Grata, raced with success by J. Bryce. Greta was by Wildwood Junior from a mare by Prince Imperial, a noted sire of trotting matrons. . . Minton Ribbons, who is fourth on the list, with seven points and a hail is by Minton Derby, a son of Ribbonwood, who was bred in New Zealand, and defeated Fritz in a match at Addington in 1903. Ribbonwood is regarded as one of the Greatest pacers of all time and amongst others, he left Realm, who recorded 2mm 3 3-Ssec for a mile* wnen he ran second to Acron in' the Pree-for-All at Addingtort. Ribbonwood was a son of Wildwood. Storm Cloud, an aged gelding by Royal’s Echo, claims as his dam a mare named Levuka, nossibly the same mare who produced Realm. Matinee* Meeting At a meeting , of members of the Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association, it was decided to hold a matinee. meeting at Addington on February 29. When it was announced M. B. Edwards had offered to give an exhibition of pacing With his two packs. War Buoy and Gamble, over a mile and a half.Or .two miles. This itself would provide a star, attraction a* both horses are in toefllghest clask Members expressed app.reeiatloh of the sporting spirit which > prompted the Yaldhfeit tralner to produce two such valuable horses for the entertainment of toe public. Other event* on the programme will include: — . Heat I—For two-year-old pacers. One m Heat 2—For maiden three-year-olds. One mile and a hall. Heat 3—Open race for maiden pacers. One mile and a half. Heat ,4—Malden trotters. One mile and a half. C. S. Donald’s Sale On February 27 C. S, Donald will hold a sale of horses of all ages, included imthe list being a good number of the progeny of Jaqk Potts, who has already given the,. trotting turf such 'high grade performers as Gamble. ’Frisco Lady, and Pot Luck. Donald will afford all interested every opportunity ol seeing his young stock in action and for the convenience of prospective buyers he extends mi invitation to anyone interested to see his horses work at Belfast to-morrow at 9.30 aun. Trottihg Stock Sale At Tattersall’s Horse Bazaar on Friday evening next H, Matson and Company will offer for sale some of the stock from Mr J. R. McKenzie’s stud farm, Roydon Lodge, The draft will include young stock of Great Bingen and Silk Thread, and a number of brood mares. Not Trying to Win A report from the Victorian Racing and Trotting Association that a driver, owner, and horse had been disqualified for riot trying to win raised am old question at the meeting of the Trotting Association as to whether action should be taken in the first instance, or whether a subsequent performance should be awaited, and a charge of inconsistent running made* Mr H. W, Kitchingham said he preferred Immediate Action to waiting for the proof of Inconsistency, Often it was only a question of the use of common sense to tell whether a driver was trying or not. The public suffered In the matter of inconsistent rumUrig. It was quite easy at times tq de»Ct the rion-trier, who would bfl.-t.fefflßJfflr. side two or three sulkies, nrfa’llMe following day driven altogether a different kind of race. He knew that drivers, at times, did riot do their best to win, and to make an example Of one or two might not do the sport of trotting any harm. . At Cut Rates At last-night’s meeting of the board of the New Zealand Trotting Association Mr,. J.H. McKenzie drew attention to the number of men - who, drawing unemployment pay, warned horses under conditions with which the average trainer could not compete. It is not fair to owners,” said Mr McKenzie, "that these men should be allowed to train horses under such ’ conditions; neither is it fair to other trainers, nor to the horses.” There had been cases of men training horses for £1 a week, end. no men could do a horse justice on this amount. It was also stated that men without licenses were training and driving horses on the Addington track, and at New Brighton there were others training horses at ridiculously low prices. It was decided to write to the stipendiary 1 steward asking him to make enquiries, and to report to the association at Intervals. The Schooling List At the Ashburton Trotting Club’* meeting on Boxing Day Cream Harvester stumbled and fell when going out of the straight, bringing down several horses. A report by the club to the Trotting Association was received last evening, when it was said that Cream Harvester had been recommended for a place on the schooling list. Mr J. R. McKenzie said the recommendation appeared to him to be ridiculous, just because the horse hap r pened to fall. He had watched the horse racing since, and it had raced as solidly as any other horse. Mr Hayward, said officials had paid special attention t 6 the running of ‘ Cream Harvester, and had found no fault

with his displays. , It was decided to ask the owner of the gelding and the stipendiary steward to , appear -before the Licensing. Committee to explain the position.

MEETING OP BOARD OP ASSOCIATION At a meeting of the board of the New Zealand jotting Association last evening there were present—Messrs J. H. Williams, J. R. MoKenaie, 8. W. Kelly, B. P. McCarthy, H. W. Kltchingham. W. Hayward, and J. B. ThomS °The Victorian Trotting and Racing Association advised the disqualification for six months of C. Brown' (lesseeowner). H. Toomer (driver), and the colt Prince Dalla for six months for not trying to win at Ascot on November 5. t . The action was endorsed. w The Wairarapa Trotting Club reported it had enquired into an accident in the Thompson Handicap at its recent meeting, and from the evidence disclosed it had found that Gay Sister had fallen over Native Berry, “No one was hurt and not much damage was done.” continued the report, but it was disclosed that “Native Berry is mulish at the start, both in races and in work, and it is decided that Native Berry be placed on the outer Of any race she may be in in the future.” The action of the Club was endorsed and it was decided to advise starters of the recommendation made. At the Auckland Trotting Club's summer meeting I. R. Morrison had been fined £3 for what was described as careless driving Of Proletarian. Members expressed the opinion that the penalty was a very light one for the offence. It was regarded as a bad case. It was decided to endorse the action of the club but to write to Morrison and to the club drawing attention to the seriousness of the offence, and stating that such breaches would be dealt with more severely in the future. The action of the Canterbury Park Club in regard to an enquiry Into the running of Lady Fame at the club's New (Year meeting was endorsed. At the Cambridge Trotting Club’s meeting C. G. Lee had been fined £3 and censured for looking round In a rape. The action of the club was endorsed. The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club reported that It had issued a caution to M. J, McTeigue for undue use of the whip on Real Burton at the February meeting. t The stipendiary steward said MeTelgue had used the whip continuously through the race and when the mMe came in she had weals oh her. McTeigue had admitted hitting his mare about four times. He was trying to drive her to the front and had she got there it was his opinion that she would not have been headed. It was decided to express to McTeigue the board's his action and intimated that a further offence would mean a review of the license held by him. The deaths of the following horses were reported!— Element, Man o' War, Manurewa, Roma Bingen, Tempo, Westmere. and Wild Peter, It was decided to ask the applicants for the names of War Nurse, Golden Slipper. Wallawa. and Clean Sweep to find other names for their horses. The next meeting of the board was fixed for March IS, at 7.80 pan.

In the list of the deaths of horses reported to the board of the New Zealand Trotting Association last evening appeared the name Ganton. As a horse of this name also appears amongst the acceptors for the opening event at Addington to-day, members were naturally curious as to the date of the death. It was explained that Ganton, by Franz-Dolly, was 27 years old when destroyed, and was no relation to the trotter of to-day, who is by Drusus from Estella Amos, and Is a half-brother to Indianapolis. Both horses were owned by R. W. Pranks, of Sockburft.
