PAPANUI GARDENS COMPETITION
AWARDS ANNOUNCED YESTERDAY
JUDGE’S COMMENT ON HIGH STANDARD OF ENTRIES
The summer judging of the gardens as seen from the street, in toe Papa-; nui Beautifying Association competition, was finished yesterday. The judge, Mr A. V, Gibson, was accompanied by Mr T. Jeal, who was m charge of the competition. ... In his remarks, the judge raid he was agreeably surprised at the improvement made in many of the gardens. The winning garden came under this category. The best garden on the day, with a blaze of colour from annuals, could not be awarded highest points because of its lack or permanent features, which was necessary for the society’s competition. A general mistake had been the plants ing of trees along toe frontage, which eventually grew too high and obscured the entire garden from the street. Mr E Tillman, president of the association, said toe; competition had proved of great benefit in the district. Nearly 40 gardens were inspected, and with half of them a lay judge would not be able to place the winner. Every year had seen an increase in the ’number of gardens worthy of con-’ sideration. Particularly pleasing were' the gardens In Perry street and Tomes road, where the owners had adopted the community gardens, with the dividing fences not passing the front line of the houses/ The placings, of the competition were:—J. A. East, 34 Hawthorne street, 15 points; Mrs J; Foster, 101 St. James avenue, 12 points; G. Rorgfeldt, 121 St; James avenue, and T. Jeal, 29 Halton street, 10 points; J. Thompson, 29, Rayburn avenue, and R. Coleman, 32 Rayburn avenue, 9 points. The aggregate points for the year were , won by G. Borgfeldt, 121 St. James avenue.
