MAGISTRATE’S COURT

Mr C,, R, Orr Walker, S.M., presided over a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Eric Mackie was fined £l, for having been found on licensed premises after hours. On a similar charge, Richard Creed was dealt with similarly. Arthur J. M. Wheeler was fined 10s, for delivering wood alter hours, Edgar Hargreaves was fined £2, and ordered to pay costs, for having driven a car in Evans street at a speed which might have been dangerous. On a charge of speeding at Smithfield he was fined £3, and his license was ordered to be suspended to the end of the term, besides which he was prohibited from obtaining another license till the end of August. Edward Hegan was fined' £3, for driving a car in a manner which might have been dangerous. Arthur Herbert Gosling, on a charge of driving a vehicle in a manner which might have been dangerous, was fined £2, and on a similar charge W. £. McGillivray was fined £3. For speeding. Myrtle Williams was fined £3, and James Martin was dealt with similarly. George Patterson was fined £l, for operating a vehicle without a heavy traffic license. Personal Congratulations to the Rev. Clyde Carr, M.P., on his appointment as associate of the Minister for Education (the Hon. P, Fraser), in the proposed reorganisation of the education system Were unanimously extended at a meeting of the Board of Managers of the TimarU Technical College. Bowls A decision to recommend clubs to stop play between the hours of 1 pm. and 3 pm. on Good Friday, was made at a meeting of the South Canterbury Bowling Centre, at which Mr R. G. Sampson presided. The request to do so was made by the Timaru Ministers’ Association. Regarding a communication from the Temuka Club appointing Mr A. Thoreau as its delegate, it was said that Mr R.' H. Taylor, who was the previous delegate, had been given permission by the centre to carry on as president, even though) absent from Timaru. The club could not have two delegates. It was decided to write to the Temuka Club asking if Mr Taylor had resigned as its delegate. The Dominion Council forwarded remits from the Otago and Wellington Centres for consideration. The Wellington remit proposed that a team of New Zealand bowlers ..should be sent to Australia in 1938 to participate in the Empire games and that a levy should be made on all bowlers to provide the necessary funds. The Otago remit suggested that a levy of 6d be made to provide the funds. On the motion of Mr J. Moyes it was decided that the remits be sent to the various clubs. Regarding the champion-of-champion rinks, which will be played to-morrow, it was decided to play all teams in one section, two hours and a quarter being allocated for each game, the team -with, most -wins to take tb.e championship. It was also decided that when the bell sounded in sectional play all games should finish, half p point to be allowed in the event of a tie. Total, Highfleld 32, Ashbury 83. Technical College The possibility of an intermediate school being established this year in Timaru was mentioned by the chairman, Mr G. Benstead, at the weekly meeting of the Timaru Technical College board of managers. Mr W. Tubb said that he had heard that some primary school teachers were prejudiced, against the technical school and advised children to attend the high schools when they passed their proficiency examinations. Mr Benstead said that the position would be corrected this year, when an intermediate school was established in the town. It would take the children of. Standards V. and VI., and it could there be ascertained whether their attitude was towards academic or postprimary education. It was decided to give further consideration to the question of attracting pupils to the school, next November. The principal (Mr F. L. N. Tuck) reported that the Technical High School reopened on February 4, with an attendance of 211 (104 girls and 407 boys), including 103 new pupils. Evening classes would be resumed on March 2, classes for professional accountancy would begin on February 24. Recent examination successes included the outstanding performance of Miss E, M. Spencer, who completed her examination qualification as a profes•sional accountant at 19 years of age, the second student to do so entirely from preparation received in day and evening schools. It was agreed to congratulate Miss Spencer on her success and also to congratulate other students who had done well in recent examinations.
