HOKITIKA

WESTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL

isF*cup to ns nutss.) HOKITIKA, February 13. The Westland County Council met yesterday, with Cr. B. Ward (chairman) presiding. A letter wa» received from Mr James O’Brien, ILF, that the Hon- R. Semple had advised Win that no money could be devoted at present for the extension of the Petersen road, but that the council had permission to spend available money on the project. The clerk reported that only £SO was available for this purpose. It was decided to take no action regarding a request that an unused portion of road at La Fontaine be closed for the use of two aettlera there. The tender of O’Brien and party wag accepted for the la Fontaine road for which the Minister for Public Works recently granted a subsidy. It was stated that the K.D.V. Company had promised £SOO towards the work. Mr L. K. Jacklon was appointed ferryman at Okarito in place of Mr J. Thompson, who had resigned. A.report said that 223 persons bad been ferried during the three.montjsi ended January 31. The sum of £lO was voted to supplement the amount raised by residents at Okarito towards the eost of preparing an aeroplane landing ground. Road Sealing The council at its meeting considered a letter from the Public Works Department suggesting the tar-sealing of the Teremakau-Kuraara Junction road at a cost of £3390, and the Kumara Junctkm-Kumara road at a cost of £OOB9, the Westland county to contribute one quarter of the cost The chairman (Cr. B. Ward) spoke in favour of tar-sealed roads, and said that a slight increase in the present rates, which were low, would enable the work to be done. Several members, while approving of tar-sealed roads, questioned the benefits of these sections of road to the majority of the ratepayers of the county. Cr. J. A. Murdock said that a quarter of the cost was too much to expect them to pay. The matter was held over until the District Engineer had conferred with the council. Salaries Increased At the meeting of the Westland County Council yesterday, salaries of the county staff were Increased as follows:—Clerk to £430, engineer to £350 and expenses, assistant clerk and mining valuer to £276, motor mechanic and driver to £252, grader motorman to £240, roadmen to £2lO, typist to £l4O.
