ZANZIBAR RIOTS
STATEMENT IN HOUSE OF ’commons
(Received, February 13,. 7.11 p,m.) LONDON, February 12. Mr J. H. Thomas (Secretary for the- Colonies) made a statement in the House of Commons at question time on the recent rioting in Zanzibar. He expressed deep regret at the deaths of Mr lan Rolleston (the Acting-Resident Commissioner): and an Indian police inspector, who were injured by the mob. The cause of the rioting was still uncertain, but it appeared to be some dispute which had arisen in the inspection of copra and the strict enforcement of the regulations against adulteration. On the information at present before him Mr Thomas saw no reason to attach , any political significance to the regrettable incident. [On -February 7 a mob demonstrated In Zanzibar against the law to prevent the adulteration of exportable copra, according to a message received here. An Indian officer and Mr lan Humphry Rolleston (Acting-Resident Commissioner) died of wounds received m riots. Order was by armed police.!
