FORESHORE DESCRIBED AS A DISGRACE
COUNTY COUNCIL MEETS
“The foreshore there is a disgrace to the council," said Cr. W. J. Walter at a meeting of the Waimairi County Council last evening, when a letter was received from the Waimairi Beach Progress League suggesting that a domain board be formed to control the foreshore at Waimairi beach. Cr. Walter said the council's trees them were being pulled up, jand was creeping across the road, and. nothing was being done to stop it. All the residents wanted was some authority to control the foreshore and prevent damage, A public meeting should be called at which the council couldi ap*point someone to supervise the foreshore. A few shillings spent at the right time in planting gorse or broom would have stopped the sand drifting, now the whole work would bave to be done again, probably .at a cost of £Zu or £3O. . * j Cr W P. Spencer said he resented the action e£ Cr. Walter ingoing into his riding and advocating the formation of a domain board, and also in describing the foreshore as a disgrace. It was true that the foreshore was ip his (Cr. Spencer’s) riding, but the responsibility was on the county as a whole. He had done the best he could with the money available. ■ The chairman. Cr. W. G. Chapman, undertook to interview the president of the Progress League and explain to him that the council had already given the league authority to, supervise the foreshore. , ..
Electrical Engineer's Car A special sub-committee recommended that the electrical engineer use his own car for such conveyance as was necessary for, him in his- duties, for which the council would allow him £6O a year. In the event of the council using the car fbr any purpose outside of the engineer’s requirements, an additional allowance of 4d a mile would be made. The report was adopted. ' n Appeals for Grants

Main Highways The Main Highways Board advised that Ham road had been declared a main highway. It was decided to "ask the board why the council's recommendation of Hillsj fc road had been passed over in favour of Ilam road. Cr. Walter contended that Hills road carried far more traffic than Ilam road.
