AN IMPOSING LIST

COMING FILMS

An imposing list of films —the productions of five well-known British and /Anerican studios —will be shown in theatres operated throughout New Zealand by Amalgamated Theatres, Ltd., during the coming year. Negotiations have now been completed and contracts entered into for the purchase of supplies from the Fox Film Corporation (Australasia), Ltd.. Fox-Gaumont-British. Fox-20th Century. RKO Radio Pictures , (Australasia), Ltd., and the Universal Film Manufacturing Company, Ltd. . . ■ An outstanding list of brilliant artists will be seen in the productions from these studios. Among the feminine players will be Joan Bennett. Virginia Bruce, Alice Brady, Shirley Temple, Jane Withers, Rochelle Hudson, Jessie Matthews. Helen, Vinson, Madeleine Carroll,- Ginger Rogers, and Lily Pons. The actors will include Ronald Colipan, Lawrence Tibbett. Wallace Beery, Dick Powell, John Boles. Warner Baxter, Fred Astaire and William Powell. Productions from the Fox-20th Century studios tvill include, “The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo,” with Ronald Colman. and “Metropolitan,” in which Lawrence Tibbett. the well-known opera singer, makes a welcome return to the screen. Victor McLaglen and Freddie Bartholomew (of “David Copperfield" fame) will appear in “Professional Soldier.” and Wallace Beery will be the leading player in “Message to Garcia.”

Popular Couple Return * Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, the popular dancing team, will appear in “Follow the. Fleet,” from the RKO Radio studios, and another fine film will be “I Dream Too Much,” featuring Lily Pons, the famous grand opera singer. Herbert Marshall and Ann Harding will be'seen in “Indestructible Mrs Talbot.” The popular comedians. Wheeler and Woolsey, will appear in “The Wild West,” and a thrilling film will be Frank Buck’s successor to “Bring ’Em Back Alive.” entitled “Fang and Claw.” “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” a silent picture in which the late Lon Chaney achieved world fame, will be made lor the talking screen by the Universal studios. William Powell, will appear in “My Man Godfrey” (temporary title) and “Sutter’s Gold.” Three thrilling films, “Bluebeard,” “Phantom of the Opera," and “Dracula’s Daughter,” will feature Boris Karloff. and Universal will also make three similar pictures, “Giant ’Plane.” “Tire Destroyer,” and “Flying Squadron.” Irene Dunne will appear in Edna Ferber’s “Show Boat” and "The Magnificent Obsession," and Margaret Sullavan will have the leading role in “Next Time We Live” and two yet untitled productions. Supporting pictures from the Universal studios will include Graham McNamee’s Universal newsreel and Oswald the Rabbit cartoons.

“Ramona,” the first big outdoor picture to be filmed entirely in technicolour, and featuring John Boles and Rochelle Hudson, will be one of the principal films to come from the Fox Studies, while another outstanding production will be “The Country Doctor,” in which the world-famous Dionne quintuplets will be seen. Shirley Temple will appear in three pictures, one already named “Captain January,” while another child player, Jane Withers, will play the leading part in “Paddy O’Day” and “Gentle Julia.” Rudyard Kipling’s story, “Soldiers Three, ’ will be one of the leading pictures from Gaumcnt-British, and another fine film will be. “Rhodes of Africa, ’ featuring Walter Huston. Conrad Veidt will appear in “King of the Damned,” a story of convicts in a

tropical penal settlement. “Secret Agent,” the screen version of W. Somerset Maughan’s spy story, “Ashenden,” will feature. Madeleine Carroll and Peter Lorre, and Richard Dix and Helen Vinson will appear in “The Tunnel." Other films include - “Foreign Affairs.” with Tom Walls and Ralph Lynn, and “First a Girl,” featuring Jessie Matthews.
