ADDINGTON PUBLIC LIBRARY
COMMITTEE CONGRATULATED ON YEAR’S PROGRESS
The committee of the Addington •Public Library received congratulations from all sides at the annual meeting of subscribers last evening for the efficiency of its. management ox the affairs of the library in the last year, representatives of the City Council :in particular expressing gratitude for j the willingness to work which the Addington library committee shared with the committees of other suburban libraries in the city. The DeputyMayor (Cr. E. H. Andrews) was elected to the chair and presided over an attendance of about 40, which included Crs. T. Andrews and F. D. Sargent, and representatives of the Linwood, Spreydon, /St. Martins, and Waltham Public Libraries. - The chairman apologised for the absence of the former Mayor (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan), who was absent in Wellington on parliamentary business and of Mr J. W. Beanland. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, the chairman said he wished to congratulate the library, not as a matter of form, but sincerely, upon its year’s progress. The balancesheet showed that the library had paid its way and had retained a small balance lor emergency. No large credits needed to be set up by suburban libraries, which were not called upon to find money for large capital works. -All that was asked of committees was that they keep in good repair the library grounds and. building?, which were the property of the City Council. Subscribers should feel satisfied that nearly all the money raised by subscriptions - had been -spent on books. A most, favourable year, in progress was recorded in the annual report, which said that the number of books placed on the shelves was 581. including 161 hon-fiction. The non-fiction section was becoming increasingly popular with subscribers. The number of books in circulation was 9879. The subcommittee dealing with old and dilapidated volumes had shown greater activity and;volumes written off numbered 489. More shelving had been installed during the year, and would prove of ‘ great benefit to the library. The rules of the library had been revised and registered, . The balance-sheet showed - a credit of £l4 25.5 d, the receipts being £335 17s 6d, and expenditure £321 15s Id. The following officers were, elected: —Patron, the Mayor of Christchurch; president.
