SOUTH ISLAND PRAISED
VIEWS OP VISITORS FROM LONDON
BEAUTY OF LAKES DISTRICT
[THE PRESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, February 12. The manner in which the South Island was comparatively neglected by tourists visiting New Zealand was referred to by Mr and Mrs H. S. Vestey, of London, who arrived in Auckland from Tauranga, Mr and Mrs Vestey have been spending a holiday in the Dominion since November,. 1934. Both said they had been particularly impressed with the South Island, where they considered there- was just as much for the tourist to see as in, the North Island, if not more; The beauty of the lakes district, especially that of Lake Wanaka, where they spent a great deal of their time, was' unexcelled. It was a pity, they thought, that greater publicity was not given to the South Island. Too many-tourists were inclined to visit only Rotorua, Wairakei, the Waitoino Caves, and perhaps the Chateau Tongariro, and then depart thinking they had seen New Zealand.
With New Zealand as a whole, Mr and Mrs Vestey both said they had been charmed. The Dominion offered a variety of scenery such as it was difficult to obtain elsewhere, and the people had been most generous in their hospitality. They had made many friends, and hoped to be able to return.
