The earliest account of Abyssinia, a book published at Lisbon in 1521, was sold in England for £B2. Some years before there was ,a search for the Empire of Prester John. The Portuguese sent an embassy to the Negus of Abyssinia,; and later the compliment was returned. When the Negus asked for aid against Mahometans, a mission was sent from Portugal in the hope of making the Abyssinians Roman Catholics.
