LAWN TENNIS

CANTERBURY. TITLE TOURNAMENT

PATTERSON'S SURPRISE DEFEAT OF DYMOND

The defeat of H. Dymond, fourth ranking player in Canterbury and runner-up for the title last year, by the veteran, T. W. Patterson, champion on many previous occasions, was the outstanding feature of the first day's play in the Canterbury Lawn Tennis; Association's annual championship tournament at Wilding Park yesterday. Play was curtailed in the morning by a heavy overnight dew and again in the afternoon by a rainstorm, but fairly good progress was made nevertheless.

All the leading Canterbury players, with the exception of H. A. Barnett, are competing, and among the visitors are E. A. Roussell, first ranking player in Wellington, P. M. B. Fisher, the veteran Davis Cut and international player, and Miss D. Smythe, first ranking player in South Canterbury. Although the courts were a little "green," they played very .truly and should assist the players to give of their best in the later rounds. The tournament was efficiently controlled by Mr S. W. Jameson, secretary to the association, and his assistants. Miss I. Morrison and Mr T. Wilson. Last Eight Men The last eight in the men's singles are Roussell, Barrer, Cant, Corich, Angas, Pattinson, Patterson, and Andrews. Dymond's defeat was the only surprise of the dav. but several of the other leading players were hard-pressed. Patterson played tennis worthy of his best days. He court as actively as ever and hardly gave away an error. He was too steady for Dymond from the back line, and when the latter came to the net countered with net-skimming passing shots or well-judged lobs. Dymond's game lacked its usual punch, and Patterson made no mistake in taking advantage of what might have been only a temporary weakness. After Dvmond had faltered when leading 3-0 in the first set Patterson gave him few chances of again finding his attacking game. Patterson now plays H. ,S. P. Andrews, sixth ranking player in the province, who also had to fight hard to overcome R. H. Tait's wily attack of sliced drives and angled volleys. The winner will qualify to meet the champion, C. Angas, whose quarterfinal opponent will be young R. G.' Pattinson. The latter mav be counted ! on to offer keen opposition. Angas yesterday was extended bv the aggr*ss.'ve left-hander, T. W. Walls.

In the other half of the draw Roussell, who was a little too severe and active for W. S. Somerville. will now meet B. A. Barker. Canterbury's fifth player. A. R. Cant will face another gnod youngster. I. J. Corich, who, although he dropnod a set to an improving plaver. McGillivrav. plaved in convincing stvle against B. D. Duffield. the tenac'cus exponent of the ambidextrous style. Keen Women's Games The women's singles title is not defended this year. Mrs C. B. Beatson (formerly Miss Marjorie Sherris) having left the province. Miss T. Poole was in impressive form asainst the former champion, Miss M. Wake, whom she met in the first round, conceding only one game in each set. She reached the semi-final with a win over Miss E. Fleetwood, whose strong driving gained her frequent points. Miss Poole will now meet the winner of Miss N. Bishop and Mrs D. Macdonald. Miss Bishop's game was too solid for Miss Smythe. the Timaru girl failing tt> show her best tennis. One of the best matches of the morning was that in which Miss I. Poole, second ranking player, beat Miss D. Dickey, the youngster who has risen to fifth position this year, in three sets. There were many long rallies, but it was. good, hard-hitting tennis all the time. When Miss Dickey learns how to defend against good-length driving she will be a player of the first class. In the quarter-final Miss Poole beat Mrs E. M. Peppier fairly comfortably, although the latter took the score to 4-all in the second set with well-placed winning drives. Two more young players. Misses I. Morrison and C. Reese, had a splendid hardhitting duel, the former gaining two out of three advantase sets. The winner will play Miss E. Rudkin, fourth ranking player, for the right to contest the semi-final.

Fisher's Varied Shots

Fisher proved a colourful and attractive personality in the doubles. He still uses a great variety of spin services and drives, gains some amazing angles with his volleys, and deals decisively with anything short at the net. With Browning, he put out a strong pair of youngsters, Pattinson snd Penfold, to reach the semi-final. Their opponents will be the winners of Cant and Andrews and Somerville and Tait. The former pair saved four set points in a long first ;set against Barrer and Patterson, the lastmentioned player again showing grand form. Angas and Dymond, the defending champions, and Roussell and J. H. W. Sheppard, _are the other semi-final-ists. The latter pair had to work hard to beat koughnan and Arnold, who hit aggressively at everything within reach.

In the women's doubles the titleholders. Misses I. and T. Poole, showed good form in beating Mrs Peppier and Miss Smythe, and will play, in the semi-final. Mrs Macdonald and Miss Rudkin. Misses Bishop and Fleetwood and Miss Wake and Mrs Carl are the semi-finalists in the other half. Little progress has been made with the mixed doubles, but the junior events are well advanced.
