EIGHT STREAM-LINED LOCOMOTIVES

ORDER PLACED WITH ENGLISH ELECTRIC COMPANY (PSSAS ASSOCIATION TBLMBAItJ WELLINGTON, December 11. The General Manager of Railways (Mr G. H. Mackley) on behalf of the board said to-day that eight main-line electric locomotives had been ordered for the new electrified section from Wellington to Paekakariki. The order had been placed with Messrs Cory-Wright and Salmon, whose principals, the English Electric Company, Ltd. (London), would work in closest cooperation with the Railway Department. . , The first locomotive will be manufactured in England; but the rest will be manufactured at the Hutt workshops, where electrical equipment will be erected and locomotives tested before being put into service.

The engines are of the most modern type, and are specially designed for working on the severe gradients and curves which make railway working in New Zealand such a difficult problem, Mr Mackley said. They will be streamlined, both for improved appearance and performance. Each will be capable of hauling a freight load of 50 tons each way of the journey, and each will weigh about 84 tons.
