Dr. P. Stanley Foster, who has been paying a short visit to the North Island, will return to Christchurch on Sunday morning. Among the passengers by the steamer express yesterday morning were Messrs D. Reese, J. D. Hall, and W. H. Woods. Mr G. M. Hall, a new member of the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, was welcomed to the meeting of the council last evening by the president (Mr F. W. Hobbs). Congratulations to two members of the council, Mr S. G. Holland, on his election to Parliament for the constituency of Christchurch North, and to Colonel H. C. Hurst, who has, in recognition of his services to the British Empire, been appointed a Commander of the British Empire, were extended by the president of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce (Mr F. W. Hobbs) at a meeting of the council of the chamber last evening. Mr Leo du Chateau, of Wellington, has been appointed personal representative for Dr. Max Rheinhardt’s picture production of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” to be released by Warner Brothers. Captain J. F. Spring Brown, of the Aorangi, who is to retire upon his return to Sydney from Vancouver, has been in command of the Aorangi for about four years, and has been very popular with the travelling public. He will be missed by a large circle of friends, both ashore and afloat, says the “New Zealand Herald.” He has had command of a number of the Union Company’s steamers, which have carried thousands of passengers without mishap. For a number of years Captain Brown was in command of the Narbada in the Indian trade, but he is best known for his service on the Aorangi. He will reside at Vaucluse, Sydney. Captain J. T. Rolls, formerly of the Niagara, and Captain Todd, of the Tahiti, also reside in Sydney,

Motions of sympathy with the relatives of three former members of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, Messrs Peter Davidson (a former president), George Watson, and T. G. Russell, were passed at the meeting of the council of the chamber last evening.
