KENNEL NOTES

[By CALEB.] [Queries for answer In this column should he addressed to “Caleb,” care "The Press,” Christchurch, and to ensure publication on any Saturday must be received not later than the Wednesday preceding.] Mrs V. N. Donaldson, owner of the Selkirk Kennels of Rough-coated Collies, Oamaru, has at present an outstanding litter of puppies. They are by ch! Rajah : of Lochiel from Judith of Selkirk. There is splendid breeding on both sides, the dam especially being from first-class stock, which is most essential; she claims as sire Rosyth Reflection, who is a son of Commonwealth grand champion Lca’brook Relad. Judith is now nursing three dog puppies and a,bitch pup, and they are very promising, all being showily marked. Mrs C. L. Ridgen. a well-known Christchurch Pekingese breeder, reports an unusual, litter of six PuPP^vstwo dogs, whelped by her bitch, TangSoo of Nirrabooka, and sired by Chong of Windermere Himself, tn~ property of Mrs U. Jones. The breeder is particularly pleased because four of the youngsters, two of either sex, are the much sought after parti-col-oured, taking after their sire in this respect; they- also have good head flares, which is rather hard to get m this colouring. The other two puppies are red. Mrs Ridgen is rearing all of the litter, as the dam and her babies, in spite of their number are all strong and healthy, and doing W Mrs G. S. Roberts writes from Leithfield that her Scottish Terrier bitch, Kiltie, is shortly due to whelp to her latest acquisition to the kennels, Cumbrae Sporran. This young dog is from Dt. Smith Morton s imported stock, and v/as successful at the recent Canterbury Kennel Clubs annual show. . , Mrs M. B. Wood, of the Mairehau Kennels, Christchurch, has disposed of a pure white Sealyham Terrier dog puppy to Mr F. D. J. Crowle, Riccarton, and bitch puppies from the same litter to Mr Carmichael, also of Riccarton, and Mr Denmead, Christchurch. They are by Nydfa Rajah from Mrs Wood’s well-bred bitch, Opihi Coquette. Mr Lindsay Gordon, Clive, Hawke s Bay, has had his winning Sealyham bitch, Farndon Sadie, on a stud visit to the imported dog Deganwy Rex, owned by Mr F. G. Saville,. Fairhe, South Canterbury. An exceptional litter of Irish Terriers is reportoi from Oamaru by Mr E. Vernor. His bitch, Roscommon Biddy, has just whelped eight dogs to' her kennel mate, ch, Richley Rufus. The fine young Sealyham Terrier dog, Sir Guy of Opihi, has been secured by Mr I. G. Barnes, of Dunedin, from Mr F. G. Saville’s kennels at Fairlie. He is by Deganwy Rex (imp.) from the imported bitch, Queen of Sheba. Sir Guy was made best Sealyham puppy at the last South Canterbury Kennel Club’s annual show. Mrs P. Simon, of Hoon Hay, reports the mating of her Cairn Terrier bitch, Prudence of Glendare, to the winning Rosemoyne Rambler. Both are the attractive cream colour and are quite typey. Canterbury Gun Dog Club Mr A. E. Seeker, the secretary of the Canterbury Gun Dog Club, has told me that the last year, the club’s third season, was a good one in all respects. Six field trials were held during the season, including trials for the J. R. McKenzie Cup and the Bishop and Company’s Shield. Most of the trials were well supported by members and the interest of the general public went to prove that these trials were becoming very popular. The membership had grown apace since the club’s foundation in 1932 and now totalled approximately 65, and it is expected by the secretary that the number would again improve for the coming season. The annual meeting will be held at an earlier date next year than hitherto, Tuesday, February 11, being the day decided on. Mr Seeker said that it had also been decided to hold fur trials earlier in the new year than usual, to avoid the risk of competing dogs picking up poison which is laid for rabbits about Easter time onwards. Another advantage gained by holding the fur trials in the first months of the year is the longer number of hours of daylight. All competing dogs have to find their own game, and it is essential to have all the daylight possible for judging, as the time taken by each dog to find .the game varies considerably, largely depending on the nature of the country, the direction of the wind, and the game available. As the club intends to commence activities at an early date in 1936 I would advise owners of intending competitors not to delay the training of puppies or putting .adult dogs through a “refresher course.’’ “Selkirk” Kennels of Rough-Coated Collies.
