NEW PROGRAMME

CIVIC “THE CASE OF GABRIEL PERRY” Something entirely novel in the way of mystery dramas will be seen at the Civic All-British Theatre to-day, when “The Case of Gabriel Perry” will be presented for the first time in Australia or New Zealand. It is a picture which claims the attention of every enthusiastic picture-goer, for, apart from its intriguing and arresting plot, it also introduces a new dramatic star in Henry Oscar, the celebrated West End stage actor. Other members of the cast include Frhnklyn Dyall (last seen in “Henry VIII.”), Martita Hurst, Lawrence Anderson, Olga Lindo, and Margaret Lockwood. Novelty of treatment is essential to any successful mystery story, and in “The Case of Gabriel Perry” it is one of the outstanding characteristics. One of the differences between this film and most thrillers is the settings, for the action takes place in the eighteeneighties, in a small English town. Not only does this give an added interest to the drama and characters, but the atmosphere of the place is cleverly produced. Second, the story is different in the problem it offers, Instead

of asking “Who committed the crime” the culprit is identified almost immediately, and the question is “Will he get away with it?” ’ r There is much suspense in following the criminal through his efforts to escape justice, and at the end comes a surprise twist that cannot possibly be foreseen. Staged under the title of “Wild Justice,” with Henry Oscar in the leading role, “The Case of Gabriel Perry” achieved tremendous success, and judging by its overseas reception the film promises .something even more enjoyable. .
