SPEEDWAY SEASON

OUTSTANDING PROGRAMME FOR TO-NIGH'PS OPENING The first meeting of the 1935-36 broadsiding season will be held at Monica Park to-night. Some of the finest racing yet seen at Monica Park, in fact, in New Zealand, should be witnessed, for never before has such a strong team of international stars appeared at any one meeting in Christchurch. No effort has been spared by the management (Stadium \ Sports, Ltd.) to make the inaugural programme an outstanding one, and a record crowd is expected. Eric Langton, the captain of the English test team which defeated Australia last year, Dicky Case, the brilliant Australian rider, Lionel Van Praag, who is known in England as “the Flying Dutchman,” and Jack Hobson, the outstanding local broadsider, who has just returned from a successful season in the Old Country, Will be seen in action. The major event of what should prove an evening of thrills will be a scratch match race, in which Langton, Van Praag, Case, and Hobson will be the principals. Judging •by reports received from England, Hobson should be able to give a good account of himself against such veterans as Case, Van Praag, and Langton. The latter has long been recognised as one of the leaders in the sport in England, and his riding will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the evening. Case, too, is noted for his spectacular work on the tracks, and ' Van Praag, who was responsible for getting Hobson a berth with the famous Wembley Speedway last season, is equally daring. Hobson will have the difficult task of representing New Zealand against these distinguished visitors, and great interest is being taken in his reappearance. In addition, there is a good entry of local broadsidefs for the minor events. The reconditioned track and the electric start ng gate will ensure perfect conditions for the riders. Free parking is again offered patrons.
