GRANDFATHER’S TALES

“Have You Your Gun?’*

My great-grandfather landed in New Zealand in the Randolph, One of the First Four Ships to reach Canterbury. Lured by. the call of the gold rush in Otago he decided to go there to make his fortune. One night when he was in bed tossing restlessly about he heard a robber prowling round the lent. Now there were so many robbers and thieves about that the men had to hide their gold before it was taken to the bank. It was the custom to keep a loaded revolver under pillows, but my greatgrandfather and his companion had forgotten theirs. So he said to Harry, his friend, “Have you your gun, Harry?” Hearing this the would-be thief whistled to his partner, and the two speedily decamped. After the gold-rush my grandfather settled in Woodend. —LAURIE TURNER.
