PRIZES PRESENTED Prizes won in the oral examinations in trench arranged annually by the Cercie Franeais were presented last evening' at a gathering held in the Students' Union buildings. In the absence of the president of the cercle, Dr. C. Malthus, the gathering was presided over by Madame Alan Just. The following prizes were presented: Senior Division—Gold medal presented by the late Mr G. Humphries: Lucie Morton Brown (Girls' High School) 1, Margaret Marriott (Avonside Girls' High School) 2, T. O. Enticctt (Boys' High School) 3. Junior Division —Bronze -medal presented by the French Minister for Foreign Affairs: Mary Thompson (Rangi Ruru). Prize presented by Mrs C. Malthus: Margaret Davies (Rangi Furu) Prize presented by Mile. Alice Germiquet: C. F. Bilclifl (Boys' High School). , , ■ „ The prizes were presented by Mrs C. Malthus. During the evening Madame de Cleene Rigg spoke briefly of the usefulness of learning the Drench language and the great improvement that had been made since the war in the French instructions in the schools and university. A short musical programme was very much appreciated. The following were the items: Vocal solos, "The Captive" (Edonard Lalo) and "Obstination" (H. de Fontenailles), Miss Als Jones; pianoforte solos, Studies by Chopin, Mr Gordon Anderson: instrumental trio, "Serenade" (Haydn) and "Andante" (Tschaikowsky), Miss Bertha Oliver ('cello). Miss Doreen Blumhardt (violin), and Miss Christobel Robinson (piano); vocal solos, | "Love lias Eyes" (Sir Henry Bishop) and "Cherry Ripe" (C. E. Horn), Mrs 'R. S. J, McLaren.
