ANNUAL CAWTHRON LECTURE j}R. R. J. TILL YARD TRACES EVOLUTION OF LIFE .•lICUI TO THE PRESS.) NELSON. November 14. The early forms of life and the evolutionary changes which had occurred up to the present day, were outlined in a most interesting manner last night, by Dr. R. J. Tillyard, of Canberra, Australia, in delivering the nineteenth annual Cawlhron lecture on the subject. "Tracing the Dawn of Life Further Backwards." The School of Music was filled to capacity by an appreciative audience. Mr J. Corder, chairman ot the Cawtnron Board of Trustees, presided. The address was illustrated by a tplendid set of lantern slides and the lecture, which was on an unusual, subject, will be remembered as one I of the most interesting among a notable scries. The lecture included sections on the age of the earth, the ancestry of man, primitive life in the * seas in the lower Cambrian times, and an account of recent discoveries in Australia about life in pre-Cambrian limes. A vole of thanks to Dr. Tillyard was moved by Mr 11. R. Duncan, one of the original trustees, seconded by the Bishop of Nelson ithe Rt. Rev. W. G. Hilliardi. also a member of the Board of Trustee:-. Dr. Tillyard will leave Nelson next Tuesday to give lectures about insect life, from radio stations in Wellington and Christchurch. Personal Mrs S. J. Bail, of Canvastown, has returned home from England after an absence of live and a half months. The Chairman of the Nelson Harbour Board reported to the monthly meeting that Captain Christie had sat for and passed tois pilot's license. The Nelson Harbour Board decided. ' at its meeting, to send an expression ct sympathy to Mr H. P. Washbourn 'a former member of the board), in the death of Mrs Washbourn. Harbour Board The Mapua wharfinger reported to the Nclwn Harbour Board at its meeting that the fruit output from Mapua for the season 1935, was 278.927 cases. On the showing at present, it was estimated that the export from Mapua alone would reach more than 500,000 cases this season. In this season, in view of the busy prospects, he suggested that a dredge be sent over to deal with the bar. It waj> reported that 72 launches had Used the board's new slipway since it Was installed about a year "ago.
