ATHLETICS

CHRIST'S COLLEGE SPORTS LONG-STANDING RECORDS BROKEN TWO BRILLIANT JUNIORS The performances of two outstanding juniors gave a particular interest to the Christ's College sports on Saturday. Apart from the events in which these two competitors appeared the racing was not as interesting as usual, and in the senior events times were not fast. The runners had the advantage of a fairly strong north-west breeze in the sprints and hurdles, but frequently did not make the best use of it. There was again a large crowd of parents and friends, and they were able to enjoy a pleasant day. The two juniors, in whose performances there was keen interest, were A. Coldicutt, the junior champion, and R. T. Wright, the runner-up. Wright three times broke the long jump record of 17ft BJin, established 11 years ago, and at his best he cleared ISft 2Jin. a distance which is seldom equalled in a junior championship. His best jump was three inches

better than the winning senior performance, and should stand for many years as the college record. Earlier in the day he ran a dead-heat with Coldicutt in the 100 yards, equalling the record of II 3-ssec. Coldicutt put up a fine performance in this race, and was unlucky in not winning outright. In the final of the quarter-mile later in the afternoon he ran a brilliant race to lead the field all the wav and win comfortably from Wright in 57 4-ssec. This performance was better than the record he established on Fridav, and was well below the former figure—sosec—held by V. B. Powell since 1919. Senior Title A. A. McMaster won the senior championship with 11 points, and T. J. Holderness was second with 10. McMaster is a small but determined sprinter, and Holderness, in direct contrast, a tall and solidly built middle distance runner. McMaster took first place in the 100 yards, in 10 4-ssec, first in the quarter-mile, in 55 3-ssec and second in the 220 yards. None of his performances was brilliant, but they were all of average standard, and he should be a useful member of the Christ's College team at the lnter-school sports next month. Holderness won the half-mile on Friday and to this he added a well-earned victory in the mile. He ran a well-judged race, winning by three yards in 4min 53 3-3 sec. He should be able to cover the distance in considerably better time than this.

It was most noticeable this year that the senior championship competitors restricted themselves to their own particular distances and did not attempt too many events The hurdles drew a small field, in which G. B. Spiers was the only stylist. He won easily in 16 3-ssec. The high jump was won by G. T. Kain, with the bar at sft ljin. and the mile walk by R. G. Bell, in Bmin 40 3-ssec. Championship Points
