LIQUOR SOLD WITHOUT LICENSE
FINE OF £2/5/- IMPOSED, WITH CONFISCATION
A total of 207 bottles of ale, 24 bottles and nine flaskr of spirits, as well as 108 empty bottles, valued at £25, w.ere confiscated by the police when they' raided the premises of William James O'Connor, East street, Ashburton, recently. A plea of guilty was entered by O'Connor in the Magistrate's Court yesterday to a charge of selling liquor without a license. He was fined £25 and the forfeiture of the liquor was ordered. Sergeant J. F. Cleary said three young men came in from the country, and called on defendant, who was the agent for a hotel at Christchurch, and obtained six drinks each, and took away three bottles of beer each, none of which had been ordered previously. The police raided the premises. "Accused should be able to make an income without breaking the law. Sly grog-selling will not be tolerated," said the magistrate, Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M.
