PIONEERS
Annals of a New Zealand Family. The Household of Gilbert Mair, Early Pioneer. By Mrs J. Howard Jackson (nee Lavinia Laura Mair). A. H. and A. W. Reed. 151 pp. (6/-.) Throngh Simpson and Williams, Ltd.
The youngest daughter of Gilbert Mair, who settled at the Bay of Islands in 1824, is now, at the age of 83, his only surviving child; but her memory is so good t'hat she has been able to write down a valuable account of her family's pioneering experiences. Tnese range across the main events in the early history of the colony. The Mairs had to abandon their home at Whanganui on one occasion and flee to Auckland before the Maoris; the eldest daughter of the family knew Marsden and was present at the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi; two sons, Major W. G. Mair and Captain Gilbert Mair, N.Z. Cross, fought bravely during the Maori Wars. Mrs Jackson must be congratulated on her concise style and grasp of historical detail, as well as her family
