KAIMAI'S LONG TRIP DELAYED BY SOUTHERLY GALE ( (THE MUSS Special s»rric- : DUNEDIN, September 12 After battling against a terrific gale for 47 hours the Union Steam Shiv Company's cargo steamer Kaimai arrived at Dunedin at noon to-day frten Wellington. The vessel received a s<_ivere buffeting, but no damage wa« done. . I Captain Evans stated that it was one ! of the worst storms he bad ever eni countered in Cook Strait. So tettifur was the gale that the Kaimai at times made no headway in her battle against the wind and heavy seas. The vessel left Wellington at 5.30 i p.m. on Monday, bound for Dune-din. i and ran into a heavy southerly g<-.!e a: i midnight. She was then off Capo , Campbell, and although the engines were kept at lull speed thraaghejr I the storm, the Kaimai ualy legged ■ j about one mile an hour, and less :han a mile at times. The gale eased off at noon on Wednesday. * The severity of the conditions may be gauged from the fact that the time occupied on the trip from Wellington to the. wharf at Dunedin was 591 hours. : whereas'' under favourable conditions • it -Is usually mtde'by 'iHe'lEiMit lif * 34 hours. 1
