Cop Candidates in Form Three successes have been registered by, New Zealand Cup candidates since the nominations were taken last week. Kemal Pasha won at the Otago Hunt Club's meeting last Saturday, and Gay Boy by Colossus frcm Lady Lim,ond won at Marton on the same day, and was also successful in a hack race at Wanganui yesterday. Name Claimed' The bay gelding by Paper Money from Chivalry, who will represent the Orari owner-trainer, A. L. Pratt, in the John Gfigg Stakes at Ashburton next week, will race under the name of Amount. No Tack Work • operations were again interfered with a Riccarton yesterday, and no galloping track was available.. The sand was open, and a few horses •were given easy work on it, but the majority of trainers kept their teams to the roads. It is hoped that the tracks will be dried up sufficiently to allow galloping to-morrow. Btill a Hack ' Included in the list of nominations for hack events at both the Ashburton and Geraldine spring meetings is Capital, who did most of his racing last season in open company. His stake earnings for the season amounted to £550, of which £305 was secured by 1 his four victories.

Racing at Wingatui The chief open races at the Dunedin Jockey Club's spring meeting are the Mosgiel Handicap, of £175, one mile and a quarter, and Electric Handicap, of £l4O, six furlongs (first day;, and Ranfurly Handicap, of £l5O, one mile, and Telegraph Handicap, of £l3O, seven furlongs. The two-year-old classic, the McLean Stakes, is run on the opening day, and there is a race for these youngsters on the Saturday, the Dominion-Handicap, of £IOO, four furlongs. Each day's programme opens with a mile and a half hurdle race. Nominations for the handicap events close at 5 p.m. on Friday, September 20. with the secretary, Mr L. G. Hill. There is a forfeit for the McLean Stakes and the Dunedin Guineas on October 4, when acceptances for the first day are due. His First Win

Flitacre, winner of the. maiden eyent at Wahganui yesterday, is a Sour-year-old gelding by Acre from Marble Arch—-Freebird mare Flitter, and he'is held on lease by Mr -W. R. Shattock ftom his breeder, Mr J. ■Hanks. Getting Ready

Mr C. E. Robertson's mare Wait and See. who. has been on the easy list, is again among the active workers, under the guidance of C. Morse, at Takanini. At T her best this mare possesses the capability,' and if all goes well with her She should prove the stable's best representative this season. Race Record

Reports of the Adelaide Guineas won by the Windbag colt Beamish Boy, who is-out of the Absurd mare Roseglow, show that he not only won, but gave none of his opponents a chance, and set new race repprd of lmin 40sec. Beamish Bov is owned by Mrs E. E. Jolly, having been.a gift from her husband. ... Rider Suspended The northern jockey L. Clifford was in trouble throughout the Marton meeting, on Saturday, for after receiving a severe reprimand early in the day-he was finally suspended for three months as a result of his handling of his mount in the last.race. Clifford was reprimanded after the Maiden Race as a result of a complaint from the starter about his behaviour at the post. He was on Pukepapa and he fell off when the field was let away. Another enquiry in which he was involved was called after the Farewell Handicap into the running b? Gold Gleam, who finished from the rear into fourth place, and as a result Clifford, who was on Gold Gleam, •#as placed under a term of suspension. Inland's Leading: Sire

; .Blandford. who is certain to fill first place in this season's winning stallions' list in England, was fared in Ireland at tijtp National Stud, and is by Swynf ord s%bm Blanche, a* daughter of White gfgle. As a yearling he was sold for ss9) guineas, and. during' his racing <freea*. won''-.£3388 in stakes. Comntenclrig at the stud as a four-year-old, §1924. Blandford's first: lot of twoirr o|4s won 10 races between them, has'sired four English Derby winners, Trigo, Blenheim, Windsor Lad, attd Bahram; St. Lsger, winners, Trigo,, Windsor Lad. and Bahram; Two Thousand Guineas. Bahram; One Thousand Guineas winner*. Campanula; Oaks winner. Udaipur; Irish Derby and St. Lf ger, Harinero; Brantome, who was unbeaten at two years, and won the' French Two Thousand; Grand "Prix winner. Admiral Drake, Umidwar.. Mandford was at the head of winding sires in England last season with

£75,707. easily a record. At the end of the year, his stock had won 201 races and £202,000. Stout Breeding Bahrain evidently inherits his stamina and lazy disposition from his sire Blandford, as Friar Marcus, the sire of his dam, was purely a sprinter, and his sire, Cicero, was open to" doubt as a stayer, although he did win the Derby, wrote an English critic after Bahrain's success in the Derby. It is further back that we come to the stout lines in the pedigree of the dam of Bahram. The dam of Friar Marcus was by Persimmon, a wonderful staying son of St. Simon, who won both the Derby and the Ascot Gold Cup. Then Roseland. the sire of Garron Lass, was by the Derby runner-up and Ascot Gold Cup v inner William the Third, who, like Persimmon, was a son of St. Simon. Garron Lass did not race. Roseland, by the way, was bred on much the same lines as Bill of Portland, who was by St. Simon from Electric Light, by Sterling. Roseland is by a son o; St. Simon from Electric Rose, by Lesterlin from Arc Light, by Prism from Bill of Portland's halfsister Petrel, by Peter frcm Electric Light Garron Lass was a half-sister to the Carbine mare Playaway, imported to Australia by the late Mr Francis Foy, for whom she won the Caulfield Futurity Stakes and the Newmarket Handicap. She was a stud failure, which was surprising in view of the success achieved by other mares belonging to this family. Plucky Liege, a three-quarter sister to Playaway, by Spearmint, became the dam of that brilliant French horse Sir (SJallahad HI, who won the Lincolnshire in England, and the French Two Thousand Guineas. He is now a leading sire in the United States. Another distinguished son of Plucky Liege Is Admiral Drake, who last season won the Grand Prix de Paris. Record of Great Sires

• Eight years have elapsed since Martian died and none of his progeny now figures on the turf. Comedy King, who also died several years ago, was still represented on the Australian turf last season, and his record received >a good addition. The same applies to Magpie and Rossendale. Limond's progeny have graced the New Zealand and Australian turf. Following is a list of the amounts won in stakes by the progeny of leading sires in New Zealand and Australia:—

TROTTING NOTES Reminders Nominations for the Methven Trotting Club's meeting will close next Thursday. Nominations for the New Brighton Trotting Club's second spring meeting will close on September 26. Death of Pacer

Baby Logan, at one time trained by R. B. Berry, and one of the biggest horses raced in recent years dropped dead bsf ore ths New Brighton meeting. Of late years he had not contributed anything towards expenses. Evenly Balanced Field The Railwuy Handicap, of a mile and a half, to be decided at Hutt Park to-morrow, gives promise of a most interesting race, although practically the same field is engaged in the Spring Handicap. Most of the acceptors hav© good form to recommend them, but Aerial Boy's last start over a mile and a half was from a 3min 42min mark, so he is handicapped six" seconds worse on- this occasion. Doris Derby, from O. E. Hooper's stable, won the Belfast Handicap at New Brighton in February in 3min 25 4-ssec. Agility, who tyon two races and was three times third in eight starts last season, put up her best performance when she won the Blakctown Handicap of a mile and a quarter at Greymouth, in 2min 52 3-ssec; Dundee is brilliant, but has lacked consistency: Grand Mogul won the Improvers' Handicap at Ashburton in 3min 23 2-ssec, and the Rakaia Handicap on the same, course in- 3min 21 l-ssec; Tficliff won the Opihi Handicap at the South Canterbury meeting in 3min 22 l-ssec, and the Tinwald Handicap at Ashburton in 3min \24sec; Full Hand's last performance was to run second, over 11 furlongs, at Forbury Park, in 3min 4sec; Boldina King was second to Harvestin over a mile and a quarter at Hawera in 2min 50 3-ssec; and Rare Rey, previously tra ned by F. J. Smith, hss won a number of races. There is speed engaged in this race which bears a very open appearance. W. Mc'Cay's Success e

The Victorian trotting owner-trainer, W. McKay, opened the new season by winning the Essenden Handicap at Ascot last month wtih Star Princess, a grey, mare by Globe Derby—Starland, who has been a useful stakeearner. Star Princess was one of the pacers McKay intended to bring to Auckland last season, and if he visits New Zealand later this year with Tennessee Wood, the mare may accompany him. Handicapped at a 2min 18sec rate for a mile and a quarter, Star Princess won in hollow fashion at a 2min 16sec gait.

Different Systems Because of an oversight on the part of their connexions, Valdor and Maltravers are missing from the New Zealand Derby after second payments, says Ribbonwcod in the New Zealand "Referee." This shows the weakness of having two systems, one a payment system, the other a forfeit system, for classic races. Under the forfeit system a horse is in until it is withdrawn and to owners who have the Sapling Stakes system in mind, the New Zealand Derby payments are liable to • cause confusion, with the resultant

NOTES ON THE RACING (spxciax. to she pi,ias.) WANGANUI, September 12. ■ Soundly Beaten Going Gay, favourite for the maiden race, rai® well, but she was soundly beaten into fourth place, after having every chance except that she hung out oh the turn; Mowgli and Going Gay began best and made the running to the straight from Entheos, Flit Acre, and The Image, with a gap to the-' bunch, which was headed by Mesurina and Entail. Going Gay led into the straight, but Flit Acre moved forward and took charge immediately, running on for a decisive win. There was a big change in the order behind him. overlooking of payment dates. In re-

overlooking of payment dates. In recent years, other th-ea-ycar-olda whose owners overlooked the Derby payments were John Jinks and Red Shadow. John Jinks was the best three-year-old of his season, and as Red Shadow defeated Arethusa, the New Zealand Derby winner, in the Great Northern Derby, it may be said that Red Shadow's owners were probably cost a tidy sum, „..•. _:..„■.

ST. LEGER STAKES WINNER

The field closed up and Going Gay was passed by Entail and Begorrah before reaching the post. Then came The Image,. Happy Landing, Entheos, and Callisto. 'The winner scored really well, after holding a good position throughout. Entail was running on strongly from further back, and Begorrah came right from the ruck. Happy Landing was also well back early. ' < Good Display Soloist did not belie his name in the hurdle race; he gave a fast display of jumping and, outpacing his opponents on the flat, never looked like losing. Esteem gained ground on him over the concluding stages, but only because Soloist was being held in, and he had a good deal in hand at the post, while Esteem was flat out. Kaola was a poor third, with Gold Cure, Ruaform, and Bay Sand following. The winner gave nothing a chance, though Esteem ran one of his best races, t Gold Cure was possibly a bit Unlucky. He got chopped out about six furlongs from home, losing several lengths and then, when running up strongly again on the home turn, he got into the second last fence, which finally extinguished his chance. All the same,. it is doubtful if he would have beaten Soloist. Ruaform was never likely, and Lady Wessex ran off at the second fence. Gay Boy Lucky Gay Boy was favoured with a slice Of luck When Lady Eka hung out and let him through to the front as they turned into the straight, besides interfering with Sporting Song and Rust: but Gay Boy won well all the same. Rompalong and Lady Eka led out of the straight and down the back Lady Eka had charge from Rompalong, Gay Boy, Sporting Song, Midacre, Blue Tiger, and Trackman. Rompalong was nearly down on the turn, and dropped back, Lady Eka being in front of Gay Boy and Sporting Song as they entered the straight, but Rust showing up on the outer. When Lady Eka hung out Gay Boy shot through, and soon had the race won, though Lady Eka got going again at the finish, with Blue Tiger, Sporting Song, and Rust well up, followed by' Silver. Brier, Rompalong, and Ingenuity. The winner raced solidly and is improving. Lady Eka showed striking improvement, both in form and stamina, and was possibly a bit unlucky in not bringing off a sensational win. Silver Brier was disappointing. Narrow Win Royal Banquet, favourite in the four horse MarangaL Handicap, was narrowly beaten by Ruri, who had the luck to get up on the inner on the home turn. Royal Banquet made all the running, attended by Spiral, and Ruri, with Tres Sec last. Tres Sec moved up towards Spiral on the home turn, and this put Ruri in a bad pocket, but he suddenly ranged up on the inside of Royal Banquet, and in another moment was going for the post with a slight advantage. Royal Banquet fought him to the bitter end, but he had given away a winning advan- j tage, and could not recover it. Spiral was a poor third. Ruri put up a good performance, but he was very lucky to get up on the inner. Decisive Win Midian moved up from the middle of the field approaching the turn in the Seafield Handicap, and taking the lead off Severe about three furlongs from heme, scored a most decisive win. Golden Hair lost her rider at the start. Passion Fruit began best from No. 1, attended by Severe, Farmer, and Bunfight, with a gap to Midian, and the rear was brought up by West Tor and Fersen. Severe took sole charge down the back, but lost the lead to Midian ] about half-way round the turn, and was also being passed by Passion Fruit, as she weakened entering the straight. By the time they straightened up, Midian had the race well won comfortably from Passion Fruit. West Tor put in a strong run home for third, with Carfex and Fersen handy, and then Farmer and Severe. Midian gave one of his "best displays, winning very impressively. Passion Fruit ran a good race, and West Tor finished well, but they never looked like getting Midian Fersen also finished well, and is improving. Severe failed s'gnally to run on. Bunfight was never a poss-bility.

Outsider Second Alchemic, favourite for the Hack Spring, just won in a very close finish, with an outsider in Thane. Lady Ruler and Grand Score began best, and made the pace to the turn from Gold Gleam, Alchemic, Mustang, Hunting Cat, Granvale, and Thane. Lowenberg, who had drawn No. 1, began slowly, and by the time they ran out of the back stretch had fallen right back to the rear. Lady Ruler weakened on the turn, and Grand Score entered the straight in the lead from Gold Gleam and Alchemic, with the field closing up. Alchemic headed off the leaders over the last half-furlong, but Thane put in a solid run and at the post had just failed by the na,rrowest of margins to get* up. Gold Gleam was a close third, v/ith Lowenberg fourth, followed by Hunting Cat, Grand Score, and Mustang. Alchemic's win was very close, and he carried a 51b allowance, but it was all the same a good effort. Thane nearly won at long odds, and should be improved by the race. Gold Gleam also ran well. Lowenberg's performance was possibly the best of all, for he never had a run until too late. Grand Score failed to stay, but ran well, and so did Hunting Cat and Mustang. Tail Light ran moderately. Brilliant Win The three-year-old filly Galilee showed her class by winning the Flying Handicap in brilliant style all the way. Mother Superior, Slippery, Refresher, H Duce, and Hororata were the handiest early, Haut. Monde, Gold Mission, and Curie being slow to move off Slippery went up :o Galilee on the turn, but the filly was always doing it better, and held her own to the post from him. Haut Monde put in some fine galloping at the end to

get a moderate third, with Mother Superior fourth, followed by Refresher, Gold Mission, Curie, Hororata, and II Duce. Galilee won like a good class three-year-old. The time for the state of the track emphasised the merit of her win. Slippery again ran honest race, and improved a little. Haut Monde was unlucky to lose ground at the start, and then, when finally going up on the inner, he got stopped. It was the best performance on the day of the Guineas candidates. Mother Superior ran a very creditable race for a first appearance. Hororata showed up for a while only, as did II Duce.

ENGLISH. RACING ST. LEGEE WON Bf BAHRAM COMPLETES TRIPLE CROWN (risrrsD press association—cofibhSbt.) LONDON, September 11. The Doncaster meeting, was continued to-day, when the St, Leger, the last of the season's classics, was decided. It enabled Bahrain to join the select band of colts who have won the "Triple Crown," the Two Thousand Guineas, Derby, and St Leger. The following is the result:— ST. LEGER STAKES „ x Of 100 sovs each, with 4000 sovs added: second horse 10 per cent, third v horse 5 per cent, of the whole stake, and breeder of winner 500 sovs from the stake. For three-year-olds. One mile and thteequafters and 132 yds. H.H. Aga Khan's b c BAHRAM, Blandford—Friar's Daughter 9-0 C. Smirke 1 Sir M. McAlpine's b c Solar Ray, *' Solario—Trincomalee 9-0 J.Slrett 2 Lord Glanely's br c Buckleigh, Sansoviiio—Buchaness 9-0 A. Wragg 3 Eight horses started. Hairan wvas scratched. Won by five lengths, with the third horse three lengths away. Bahram has run his last race. He will retire ot the stud at a 500 guineas fee. He has won at all his nine starts, earning £43,088 in stakes.

Bahram, by bis win in the St. Leger Stakes this week, has won nine races and retires undefeated, while he has the distinction of winning the triple crowd, the Derby, Two Thousand Guineas, and St. Leger, thus joining a select band including Diamond Jubilee, Flying Fox, Galtee More, Isinglass, Common, and Ormonde. Bahram was bred by his owner, H.H. Aga Khan, who a few years ago purchased the dam, Friar's Daughter, for 250 guineas. Although a splendid mare, she did not achieve any great distinction on the racecourse, as the best she could do was to win one small race worth £l6B to the winner—not a very imposing record for a mare destined to breed horses which were to distinguish them J selves in the classic races. Bahram is not the first good colt produced by Friar's Daughter, as she is also the dam of that good little horse Dastuf, who was second in the Two Thousand Guineas to Orwell, and second in the Derby to April the Fifth. Bahram must have won more than £40,000 in stakes and his value could now safely be placed at £IOO,OOO. He was ridden in the St. Leger by C. Smirke, who won the Derby and St. Leger last year on Windsor Lad. The latter did not start in the Two Thousand Guineas. It was a last-minute mount for Smirke, as the stable horseman, F. Fox, was unable to take the ride, having met with an accident last week-end-There is an idea that H.H. the Aga Khan has dissipated some of his fabu-* lous wealth on the English turf, but* this is a completely erroneous view. He certainly has been known to pay 17,000 guineas for a yearling and huga prices for brood mares, .but since 1922, when he first began to race horses in England, his winnings in stakes have reached about £450,000, as the result of victories in more than 300 races, and he should well be able to show a balance on the right side of the ledger. He is indeed one of the lucky owners, and though he has gambled heavily on his purchases his judgment has been proved astute and very accurate.

On five occasions already his High* ness has been at the head of winning owners in England, and he is almost certain now to be there again .at the end of this year. So far he has failed to win the One Thousand Guineas, in which Mumtaz Mahal and Firouze Mahal ran seconds, but he has captured every other classic. Diophon and Bahram won the Two Thousand Blenheim and Bahram the Derby, Udaipur the Oaks, and Salmon-Trout and Firdaussi the St. Leger; and besides these wins he has secured numerous minor placings in the classics. He established his own stud in England in 1925, and horses he has bred there have earned well over half his aggregate winnings. It is said that he is a very mild better, but he usually has a "little on his favoured runners.

The following are the Aga Khan's winnings since he began racing in England till the close of last year:—
