W. H. HUDSON
(J) Far Away and Lois: Ago. (H) Hampshire Days, (V\) A H ! n«J in Richmond Parlr. By W. H. Hudson. J. M. Dent and Sons Ltd. (4/6 net each.)
These are three volumes of the Popular Edition of Hud~on's writings, now issued at a reduced price; and there is nothing to do but welcome, praise, and thank. Hudson belongs, with Jefferies, Gilbert VTiite, Waterton, Edward Thomai, and a very few more, to the small band of English who have achieved in literat :re. "Far Away and Long Ago" rates him among the great autobiographeis. And besides, again, he must be counted in on any tally of EngLsh essayists. Bid him stand aside as a novelist —a rough, bold challenge, in the face of one or two books—still he cannot be passed by. Hudson was one o those men who know their ground, by dint of sacrifice and study and by aid of affection, and so reach to a wisdom and a sense of beauty a.iC wonder.which they expreso with a wonderful clarity. Hudson at a few shillings a volume is muc»- for little.
