MID-CANTERBURY

ASHBUBTON PERSONAL Mr G. A. Franks, Lyndhurst, has been appointed the delegate of the Mid-danterbury Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union at the Dominion conference of the union at Wellington next month. Appreciative reference to the reports of meetings of the Mid-Canterbury executive of the Farmers' Union by Mr A. Mitchell, the representative of the "Sun," during the many years he had been attending the meetings was made by the president of the executive (Mr R. Oakley) yesterday. He said it was the last occasion on which Mr Mitchell would attend the executive's meetings, and he wished . to thank him for the way iri which he had reported the business. Flock Ewe Competition The entries for the Mid-Canterbury ilock ewe competition, under the auspices of the Ashburton, Mayfield, and Methven Agricultural and Pastoral Associations, closed last evening with a total of 27, compared with 30 in 1032. when the competition was last held, there being one more class on i that, occasion. The entries have come in from all sections of the Ashburton County, and judging will occupy two days—next Thursday and Friday—the first day being devoted to judging on the south side of the Ashburton river and the second to judging sheep on the north side of the river. On Friday evening a social will be held for the announcement of the awards and the presentation of trophies. The entries in the various classes are as fol-lows:—Two-tooth and over halfbred or Corriedale ewes, 7; halfbred or Carriedale ewe lambs, 13; three-quarterbred or crossbred ewe lambs, 3; farmers ewes, any age, 4. » Frost A frost of 0.5 degrees' intensity was recorded at the weather station" in the Ashburton Domain yesterday morning. The weather was pleasant during the i day. Farmers' Union The monthly meeting of the MidCanterbury Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was held yesterday, when the president (Mr Raymond" Oakley, of Mayfield) presided. The Otago Provincial Council of the union wrote urging that action be taken to protect barley growers and I suggesting that a board or committee ! be set up to consider methods of marketing and introducing a protective tariff, particularly against th« importation of barley from Australia. The president said barley was admitted from Australia free of duty so long ns it was used for feed, but it would appear that a grade suitable for brewing was coming in under that | heading. i Mr J. Brown (Ashburton) said there | was more barley grown in the Eilesmere district than at Ashburton. ! It was decided that the Mid-Canter-bury delegates to the Dominion FarmprV Union conference at Wellington next month attend n conference on the question. It was decided that the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board be written to requesting that provision be made for Mid-Canterbury to have one delegate each vear on the electoral college of the board. It was agreed that the North Canterbury delegate be asked lo support the proposal. In accordance with the established practice, it was agreed to support the nomination of a delegate of the North Canterbury Provincial Executive to ; the Electoral College of the Meat Board. The New Zealand Farmers' Union, Dominion Executive, forwarded n reply from the Government following the resolution drawing its attention to excessive charges being made for snare parts of farm machinery. The Government's reply stated that an investigation into the prices charged

would be an undertaking that would occupy a substantial length of time and would put manufacturers and importers of those parts to a considerable amount of trouble. The Dominion Executive esked for specific cases of over-charging. Mr F. G. Evans (Ashburton Forks) said that it was time that all-round costs should be taken into consideration. Prices of primary produce had come down and appeared to be more or less stable, therefore other costs should come down. Excessive costs were half the trouble of the farmers. Mr W. R. Hammond (Winehmore) stated that members should remember that firms were required to carry large stocks of spare parts for the convenience of farmers, some of which might never be used. Mr C. A. Campion (Methven) in- i stanced what he considered was an j exorbitant charge for the spare part for a tin mill, while another member! referred to the excessive cost of a J part for a separator. It was agreed that members refer | to the secretary any further instances ] of excessive charges being made for | spare parts for machinery. The Dominion executive wrote that j a request had been received asking for contributions to the King's jubilee fund of the New Zealand branch of the British Empire Cancer Campaign Society. On the motion of Mr C. C. Winn (Methven) it was decided to receive the letter on the ground that the present funds for research were quite adequate until science had made more progress than it had to-day. Mr Winn said that the funds were growing faster than they could be used satisfactorily. The following were appointed to the standing committee of the executive to deal with urgent business and to meet before the general meetings:—Messrs R. Oakley (Mayfield), G. A. Franks (Lyndhurst).
