CANCER RESEARCH
to in* bwto» or ch» »b»ss. Sir, —In "The Press" this morning I see that the president ot the New Zealand branch of the Cancer Campaign Society is considering making further application to the Travis trust. Dr. Elliott also states that "the trustee is bound in the terms of the trust to avoid any provincial feeling." May I be permitted to quoce the wishes of the late Mr Travis which appear in his will. Mr Travis expressed the wish that the incor e should be administered by three gentlemen of good repute, in the city of Christchurch, to carry out the administration of the trust The application of the income is at the discretion of these three gentlemen, not by the trustee of the will; and he suggests that these .three gentlemen should be the holders of some public office—the Mayor of Christchurch, the chief magistrate of •Christchurch, and a member of the stall of the Hospital Board. The trustee has to appoint this committee by deed. In consequence of these explicit directions, the provincial feelings referreu to by Dr. Elliott cannot come in. The Travis trust has already given money to the cancer fund, but has done absolutely nothing for research into tuberculosis, in spite of the fact that New Zealand is pre-eminently suited for tne research into and cure of tuberculosis by modern methods of alpine heliotherapy. It would be a very fine gesture on the part of the Travis trustee to offer to pay the salary of a medical man for research work if the Society for the Assistance of Crippled Children did decide to consider the proposal of the Sunlight League, that a solarium for South Island children, crippled witr, tuberculosis, should be built from a portion of the allocation of the Nuflteld fund to the Sou i Island. If this proposal were taken up, still further assistance surely might be expected from the Canterbury Hospital Board and the Health Department. —Yours, etc.. SOLARIUM. June 21, 1035.
