INMATE OF JUEILEE HOME DISAPPEARS
It is feared that Miss Elizabeth Chattaway, a single woman, aged 62, of the Jubilee Home, Woolston, has been drowned in the Heathcote river. She wa.s missing from the home all day yesterday, and her coat was found on the bank of the river near the Bamford street bridge. At the same place footprints were noticed, and police spent the whole day dragging the river in search of her body, without success.
Miss Chattaway occupied a detached room at the Jubilee Home, and was at liberty to come and go as she wished. She was not in her room when morning tea was taken round at 7 o'clock, but it was thought then that she might be in some other part of the building. When she did not appear at breakfast Matron Gill immediately organised a search, nurses going out on bicycles to look for Miss Chattaway At 9 o'clock Constable W. Fowler, of Woolston, began dragging the river after the discovery of a coat and footprints on the steep bank. He was joined later by Constables R. Barwick and P. Simmons, and with them dragged the river without success for several chains, each side of the point at which the coat was found. It is understood that Miss Chattaway's health has Jately given some concern.
