NOTES ON THE RACING

(IPKill. TO Till f3«S».» DUNEDIN, May 6. An Easy Win Palmary was made a much better favourite than Lycidas for the May Hurdle Handicap. Sunward led Palmary and Prince Tfactor over the first .'e.-jce, then Prince Tractor joined bunward, and the pair led Hystride and Palmary into the back. Going to the far turn the field bunched, and at the last hurdle but one Lycidas joined Sunward and Palmary. Just on the ium Lycidas slipped and fell, ana I'aimary got through on the rans. I'alnoary led over the last hurdle from Sunward and Hystride, and ran home an eaujy winner by three and a na« knjflJw from Sunward, who beat HyKtride by two lengths. Prince Tractor wtis eight lengths away fourth. .Mary Pratt's Success Song Boy and Ballard were best hacked for the first division of the Trial Handicap. From an even line B«dlard was lirst to show out, and was joined in a few strides by Mary Pratt. This pair quickly drew out well clear irorn Song Boy and Mount Val racing i'f the far turn, and they raced up tijff nse in that order. Turning for home Ballard ran out very wide, and Slary Pratt was two lengths clear f.'orn Song Boy and Mount Val at the 'iistar.ee. * Mary Pratt stayed on to heat Mount Val by a length and a half. Song Boy was a length away third, a neck in front of Autumn Wind, who finished very f 33 *. Ballard fcrtd King Victor were next. Foreign Star Scores foreign Slur was about £25 better Kackrfi on the win machine than Stinic f t ,r the .second division. Dis**mble b<'pan best and led Foreign * Star, Hauteur, Diapason, and Surge. The latter had DisMJttble's measure at the distance and beat her home by a length and a quarter. Surge ftnished on well a similar disk nee away. Hauteur was six length:; av.-ay fourth.

JUBILEE CUP WON BY SWEET MUSIC RL'RI SUCCEEDS IN DAVIDSON HANDICAP (F*S«« 45SOCIATlO» TELIGEAU.) HAWERA, May 6. For the second day of the ICgmont Racing Club's meeting there was line, cold weather. There was a splendid attendance. The track was heavy. An enquiry was held into the running of Goid Mission in the Shorts Handicap, on the grounds of alleged inconsistent running. No action was taken. There was also an enquiry into the falling of Aussie Ra in the cup, but the stewards found that no blame was attachable to anyone. The totalisator handled £14,989 10s, compared with £0532 for the second day last year, making the total for the meeting £23,612 10s, against £14,989 last year. cap. From a prompt start Kemal ! Pasha, Venite, and Grand Finale re- | eeived a slight advantage. Venite led First Song and Nightform out of the i straight, and into the back Venite was racing just clear from First Song, with Toreador, Grand Finale, Chhota, I Nightform, and Fair Weather next. I After rounding the far turn Toreador joined Venite and the pair drew out three lengths clear from Nightform, with Chhota and Amy Johnson next. On the turn for homo Toreador appeared to interfere with Venite, and she dropped back. At the distance Nightform, who had covered a lot of extra ground, made a good challenge; but Toreador held his advantage to win by a length. Ramo finished fast into third place half a length off, and Venite was next. Umtali Succeeds Royal Limond was more than twice as well backed as Umtali for the Celebration Steeplechase. Membo led over the first fence and to the double, where he lost ground and Graball took charge from Whipknot and Royal Limond. Membo dropped out going to the water jump, where Graball was racing clear from Red Lance, Whipknot, and Royal Limond. There was little change over the next mile, and after crossing the big sod wall the second time round Graball was leading Umtali by two lengths, with Red Lance and Royal Limond handy. Membo and Whipknot were beaten oil'. The field raced in that order until crossing the big post and rails four furlongs from home, where Umtali jumped to the front. Going to the water jump, Umtali, Graball, Red Lance, and Royal Limond were all together; but Umtali gained a couple of lengths in the jump and Royal Limond lost a similar distance. Umtali was then three lengths clear from Graball, with Red Lance and Royal Limond two lengths further back. Umtali stayed on to beat Graball by four lengths. Royal Limond was five lengths off third, and Red Lance close up fourth. The other two completed the course. Easy Victory Double Shot and Travenna, the former better backed by £25. monopolised the wagering on the Buckingham Handicap. Master Anomaly and Cherry Queen were the first to show up, the favourite being slow to jump out. Before reaching the far turn, Travenna got through next to the rails and headed Cherry Queen and Rin Tin Tin. He drew out going up the rise, and turned into the straight four lengths clear of Silver Streak, Master Anomaly, and Double Shot. Travenna stayed on to win easily by four lengths frpm Silver Streak, who beat Double Shot by nearly two lengths. Hula Belle was next.

Favourite Beaten Unseen, penalised 61b for his previous win, had a 51b allowance, and was made nearly twice as good a favourite as Daring Deed or Gold Fox for the Farewell Handicap. Moneygran, Aro Arc. arid Unseen were the smartest out from the barrier. After a furlong and a half, Unseen ran into second place and Moneygran led Unseen and Gold Fox into the straight. At the distance, Unseen headed off Moneygran, and both Gold Fox and Braw Lad niade good challenges. In the run to the post. Gold Fox drew out to win by a length from Braw Lad, who beat the favourite by a length and a half, j Daring Deed was only a neck away J third. . .

NOTES ON THE RACING

(SPS'Jiit. TC TH3 »ESSA HAWERA, May 6. A surprise Ruaform surprised by winning the hurdle race, but he was always handy, and finished just a trifle better than Tareha. Tareha looked a certainty when he ran past the leaders, Gowanlea and Ruaform, at the last fence, but Ruaform caught him again on the post. Gowanlea was right up thud, but the remainder were well beaten. The favourite, Esteem, ran a good race, and was well up at the last fenc-p but one, where he lost his rider. Invictus ran well below the first day's form, and was always well back. Arctic Star ran a very good race for a novice hurdler, and finished fifth after being prominent throughout. There were extraordinary variations in the betting, the winner being the place favourite, but paying nearly double, figures straight out. Outsider Wins On form, it. was not necessary for some of the fresh blood in the Coronation Stakes to be much above the average to win, and that honour fell to Bantry, who. besides being the only two-year-old in the race, was having his first start. He was a big outsider, but there was no question about the way he won. The favourite Caen made the pace to the turn from Spouting Song and Lady Eka, but Bantry, who had not got off with the leaders, ran up on the outer on the turn. Continuing his run, Bantry drew right away from his opponents in the straight, while Sporting Song just held on for second from Anslem, with False Witness next, and Red Sand and Lady Eka heading the bunch. Nothing else had a chance with the winner, who is by Acre. He is trained by R. Brough, who also had the third horse, Anslem, in the race. False Witness showed promise for a novice, while Caen, a member of the well-known Karamu family that supplied Anomaly, Shirley, etc., showed early pace. Transacts Success The Adamson Steeplechase was; a gift for Transact. He did not begin well, and was last early; but he moved up to the front going out of the straight for the final round, and was always full of running. Transact gave a much improved display of jumping. He made one mistake, hitting the post and rails about five furlongs from home; but he quickly got going again and finally won, pulling up, by a big margin. Riotous, who had always been prominent and had jumped well, tired a bit over the concluding stages; but he was still good enough for second place, while for third Copey just beat Beau Star on the post. Then, at intervals, came Capella Abbey, Pahu, Chile, and Taura Lad. Riotous will improve; but the form of the others was unimpressive. Pahu put up a poor race over the last mile, and Chile was always making hard work of it well back, while in addition he nearly tossed out at the post and rails tho last time. Tho winner, while favourite for a place, was only fourth choice for a winner—an extraordinary summing up on the part of the public.

Sweet Music Scores The large- fleic! of 18 for the Jubilea Cup, and the run of less than a furlong to the turn out of the straight, put a premium on good beginners; and the majority of the runners were in hopeless positions very early. Those that began well and got positions were Engi, Royal Secret, Darecourt, and Sweet Music, and over the concluding six furlongs it was obvious that nothing from further back would get up. Engi made the running from Sweet Music, Royal Secret, and Darecourt. Royal Secret and Darecourt were beaten on the turn, where Reipar and Timorous became prominent. Engi and Sweet Music, however, drew right away in the straight, and had the finish to themselves, Sweet Music, vigorously ridden by Broughton, wearing down the top-weight. Ingenuity came from the rear of the field to take third from the beaten lot, who were headed by Timorous, Amyril, Royal Dash, Reipar, and Arctic King. Sweet Music ran on much better than her form in the hack even, on Saturday indicated. She won meritoriously. En;?i put up a great effort, and as well handled as Sweet Music would have reversed the order. Nothing else hnrt any chance, and while a smaller field will see many of them improve, Royai Secret and Darecourt had every chance. Aussie Ra fell on the turn out of the straight. Sweet Music paid a Kood price, much better than any mount of Broughton's usually returns. Ingenuity's place dividend also ran into double figures. A Good Tussle Gold Mission, always better placed than on the first day, won the hack sprint after o good tussle in the straight with Chikara, who had run up prominently on the turn. Orac was a fair third, after being the early pacemaker, and the rest had no chance. Te Hai got left through Hs own fault, but he ran into the lead at the half, only to fade out again at the finish. Orac was unlucky in getting chopped back at the half. A Change of Form There was a change of form amongst the sprinters, Refresher winning from British Columbia, with the hot favourite, Cawbeen, right out of the picture Boughal made the early pace, but collapsed on the turn, where Refresher and British Columbia began to draw away. Refresher, hard ridden, held on for a narrow win. Orapai was a moderate third, with Full Throttle and Cawbeen next. The favourites ran very badly, and Broughton, changing rides from Boughal to Cawbeen, was a disastrous lead for backers. An Easy Win Ruri went to the front six furlongs from home in the Davidson Handicap, and never looked like losing. Carfex and Trishna camo at him in the straight, but he iiad little difficulty in holding them Only Three Starters Only three started in the Borough Hack Handicap, and Qnewhetu defeated the favourite, Lionheart. Onewhetti was winning comfortably in the straight, but his rider allowed him to ease down slightly, and Lionheart, whom Broughton kept riding hard, ran him to a neck after seemingly being well beaten.

SILVER JUBILEE AND PERSIAN SCORE

(UKITED FKH34 4 SSOCIiTIO* — JtT ILBCTat® TELBOEUPH—COFTRtQHT.) (Received May 6, 9.20 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 6. There was dull and showery weather for the jubilee meeting at Randwiek to-day. The sodden track and bad weather made the attendance poor. Silver Jubilee gave a splendid exhibition of galloping ability in the Buckingham Palace Handicap. Silver Jubilee was slow to move from the barrier rise, but, favoured by a clear run on the rails, soon reached the front, and the race was never in doubt after that. Peter Pan continued his winning way to secure the coveted Jubilee Cup by a five lengths' margin. Persian won the Balmoral Handicap by a brilliant display, racing to the front shortly after the barrier rise. He was not afterwards troubled and won by three lengths, thus securing the second win for New Zealand. HAMPTON COURT PLATE, Of 500 govs. For two-year-olds. Six furlongs. CASCADK <5-10 ' . .
